This is an excellent read!
I read this book with my wife while I am deployed in Iraq. We have seen many situations that we can totally relate to and others that we have learned from. As a Soldier, my family has experienced many of the sudden lifestyle changes the Dungy's experienced during their time in the NFL, frequent moves that uproot our families from the stability they come to know. I wish I had read this book earlier in my career, I feel that it could have helped with some of the more difficult transitions. Tony and Lauren have modeled what it takes to have a special marriage that not only brings them closer to each other, but also closer to God. As I read this book it is clear to me that their faith and trust is in the Lord, and that is how they have persevered the challenges they have faced . The title refers to an uncommon marriage, one grounded in the Lord and family. Take the time to read the book, this type of marriage should not be uncommon.

Not Deep But Worth A Read
I'm rating this as 3 stars because as the star level indicates, it was just "OK". The whole book is basically a biography following Tony's career in the NFL with each telling their own account of how things unfolded for him professional and in their family. Advice nuggets based on biblical teaching are sprinkled throughout as they tell the story but I honestly didn't have many aha! moments. I found myself thinking "okay but tell me something I haven't heard a million times already". They go through similar trials that any other family faces in life - career changes, family tragedies, highs and lows. They only scratch the surface of how they dealt with these challenges and opportunities. The bases of their title "Uncommon Marriage" is founded on them being together for 30 years. Although I think that is a great accomplishment, I didn't find their story to be very uncommon. Also, I found myself thinking "that's easy to do or say when you have the advantage of his lucrative career ". Many of the issues "common" marriages face like money and two working parents, they don't have to worry so much about so it was at time hard to fully connect to their story. I would have loved to hear them be a little more candid about doubts, fears, stale moments, aging in marriage, keeping a self identity, etc - all things that naturally happen in a marriage. I understand that some things should stay between two people but it was just a little too "picture perfect" for me. Overall, I would say it's worth a quick read but don't expect answers to any deep questions.

This is NOT a step by step relationship/marriage therapy guide
I initially saw this book in a store that I work and for some reason it kept catching my eye. I decided to preview the kindle version and was able to read the first few pages; I immediately had to have it. Yes, it is a book about their marriage, how they handled Tony's coaching career, constant moving, and other life challenges; so if you are looking for something that spells out your specific issues, giving you a step by step anecdote to your problem, then this may not be the book for you. It's not meant to be a relationship therapy book, although there are quite a few principles you could learn if you take the time to really see them. To make it easy for people who have difficulty reading beyond the black letters on white pages, the end of the book provides Core Principles: Make Christ the center of your marriage, wait on God's timing, don't try to make things happen yourself, and manage expectations and appreciate your differences, just to name a few. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting more than step by step guide to fix their marriage.

Awesome!
I really enjoyed this book, for many reasons. The way in which the two write the book was very good, being able to see each event from both perspectives is very useful.

Testament on the importance of family
A very candid look at the Dungy's marriage and how two people sacrifice for each other to make their union work. It also shows how two people can work through each other's differences and personalities, embracing their strengths to, again, make their family flourish even through difficult times. Relying on their foundation of faith is huge here. Additionally, it shows how important family and friends are not only to help out every now and then but making the relationship that much more enriching. A great example of the importance of family -- even the extended one. Every marriage is a roller coaster; enjoy the ride -- and the Dungy's is no different. A highly recommended read with plenty of takeaways.

Great book for couples
Our Christian men's group chose this book for our next book study. I bought the Kindle version to share reading it with my wife. We both enjoyed it very much. It has given us lots of positive things to consider and discuss about how to make our marriage better - better for both of us and in keeping with God's plan for our lives. Tony and Lauren Dungy are truly inspiring. Our men's group did a book study of "Uncommon" last year. Several of us also reading "The One Year UNCOMMON LIFE Daily Challenge," a daily devotional. Actually, I am in my second time through it, having read each daily entry in 2013. Tony Dungy is a truly good man whose writings help me to be a better person, man of faith, husband and father.

faith wins
I felt the Dungy family was special ever since I became aware of him when he was at the U of M. The book had one theme and it repeated throughout the book. Family and love and trust in God. It was hammered away continuously. Could it been a shorter book absolutely. Could it have shown how leading the life with God as a partner happened? Yes. Does the Bible say that one should not talk about your good deeds? Yes. Inspire of this it was a remarkable book of Christian faith.
