Without setting the left dial to ON, the fan will not turn on. (If you want to turn your fan off, just turn the dial to the OFF option on either dial, but if you just turn it off from the right dial, you'll be met with just the clicking sound). However, I don't know if this is for everyone, but the clicking sound is REALLY quiet if you have the fan even on LOW. Of course, if you turn the right dial to off, you'll only hear the clicking sound, but if you just have the fan on on any setting, you most probably won't even hear it (of course if you put your ear right up to the top of the fan you'll hear the clicking). But this does have a happy ending. If you turn the left dial and set it to the top, 'ON' option, and give your fan maybe 5 hours(?) running, the clicking will stop (It stopped for me at least). Overall, if you want a fan for sleeping, taking care of your sweat or just want to replace yout current one, this one is a steal for what it's worth. However I wasn’t initially a fan of the continual ticking!! Would be far better to have the on switch separate from the timer. However if you leave the timer knob set to the on position and wait for the ticking to stop, then just operate the fan using the right hand low med high off button and don’t ever touch the timer button, it can be used without the tick sounding. I won’t be utilising the timer at all as I found the ticking annoying. The fan itself gives out a really good, cool breeze and from that point of view I am very satisfied. I bought one as a gift, and then one for myself.
