Far better than the movie
Wow, The Shining is far better than the movie adaptation. I try not to be overly critical when comparing books to their film versions, but honestly, Hallorann makes the story 100 times better! 🥹💓It took me a while to get through this book, but that was more about my schedule than the quality of the writing. Stephen King's storytelling is wonderful. I know some people say he doesn't know when to put the pen down, but I love all the little details and "unnecessary" elements he includes. They make the story richer and more immersive for me.The last 100 pages are especially gripping, and they had me so hooked that I had to finish the book in one go. King's ability to build tension and maintain a sense of dread throughout is truly impressive. If you're a fan of horror and haven't read The Shining yet, do yourself a favor and pick it up. It's a masterpiece that stands head and shoulders above the movie adaptation.

Gave me chills!
In The Shining by Stephen King, Jack Torrance, his wife Wendy, and their son Danny spend the winter alone at the Overlook Hotel. Danny possesses the ability to look into the future. The Overlook desires him and will go to any length to obtain him.The hotel has a shady history that includes murders and mafia. When Jack Torrance digs too deep into it, the hotel seems to take control of him. When Jack explored more of the Overlook, a spirit told him “A man who cannot control his own family holds very little interest for our manager. A man who cannot guide the courses of his own wife and son can hardly be expected to guide himself, let alone assume a position of responsibility in an operation of this magnitude’’(521).This moment stood out to me because it marked a significant turning point in the novel. The scene demonstrated how easily people may be swayed.Though Jack appeared to be a caring parent, the hotel eventually gained control of him and changed his perspective on his family. The novel only improved as a result of this adjustment. This makes it one of the most intense and chilling stories I have ever read.

great story - don't compare it to the movie, please!
I've been wanting to read The Shining for a long time - I was never one for popular fiction, contemporary bestsellers or modern horror, but I knew The Shining was a stone cold classic that needed to be read, especially to get a better understanding of the film (and to learn how the director altered it to his own vision). I'd recently read in an online forum people listing The Shining as a film that was way better than the book and I saw this as a renewed challenge to figure out how silly that sort of a statement is (since I had no doubt that the book would be good in its own, different way). And it is! You get the classic tale as told in the film, but with a greater emphasis on Jack Torrence's alcoholism, as well as the deep love Jack & Wendy have for their son Danny (a.k.a. "Doc"). You also get all of their backstories, and over the 650 pages there's not a whole lot of fluff, except maybe in the parts where King provides detailed description of nearly every step of a very long, long winter journey). You get the ghosts, you get the slow descent into madness, you get the history of the Overlook, it's all good. My only qualm is that it's at times just as claustrophobic as it setting, with a loooooong looooooong focus on just three characters. This is not unexpected, but unfortunately the result is that by the end of the book you're just a little sick of "Doc" and trying to figure out what the little guy's going to do next.A few pleasant plot differences from the film too, and a bit more action! Now, on to Doctor Sleep!!

Book Falling Apart
I’m only a few pages in and getting very irritated because the pages are LITERALLY falling out as I try to read. Terrible job by whoever published/printed this book.
