This Retron doesn't have operating system like the Retron 5. This one is a hardware emulation vs. software emulation. So this particular Retron model itself - won't save your progress, no.

How are the controllers?

Seem to work fine, when I play Tecmo Super Bowl somtimes A<-- gets stuck

It plays NES, SNES and SEGA GENSIS games. I have played all three on this unit and it works great.
