Quality Workmanship
Helle makes high quality knives that are beautiful and functional. The Nying is my new "pocket knife". It is very sharp, but I haven't had it long enough to know how the edge will hold up. I have soft and hard Arkansas stones for this. I gave the knife 4 stars for comfort because my hands are wide: XL or XXL glove size. I wish the handle was 4 inches long instead of 3.5. I don't think this will be a problem though and I'm anxious to use my new knife.

Really nice surprise
My first Helle. Certainly wont be my last. Exceptional quality. Extremely sharp. Really great fit and finish. Im a fan. Its what is sets out to be. Simple spartan utility. Its a really nice knife. and the sheath is excellent too. I will wear it around my neck - its very light.

... this knife nearly everyday for three years and I like it better all the time
I have been carrying this knife nearly everyday for three years and I like it better all the time. I carry the sheath in my right trouser pocket on a chain so that it doesn't slip down too far into my pocket and so that the knife is always available. It works great. I bought this knife because I was intrigued by its rather bulbous handle which I found rather humorous, but when I got the knife in my hand I realized that the skilled craftsmen who created this knife knew exactly what they were doing. It fits my hand better than the other 99 or so knives I own and somehow lends itself to my hand manipulation in a way that the others don't. The blade is also excellent. It holds its edge very well; but when it does need to be sharpened,it's easily sharpened. I also value the sheath, and particularly the leather tab which slides over the "nub" at the end of the knife handle so that the knife is easily and effectively retained in the sheath. This is important in the lush and grabbing vegetation of the coastal northwest where I live. Overall, this has been a great knife for me. It's a knife that works a lot bigger than it measures. It's excellent.

Beautiful handle, utility blade
This is a great little knife that will excel at most tasks and be a pleasure to carry, handle and use.The handle fills the palm and narrows to the finger choil providing opportunity for a precise and secure grip. The blade is triple laminated stainless, which means that the core is hard enough to hold a great edge while the supporting layers add durability. Fallkniven uses this blade construction. I have a Mora scout knife circa 1960 with a high carbon laminated steel blade that I have carried and used on many hunts. It has the same rat-tail tang birch handle construction. I find that I can process a mule deer, touch up the blade with a ceramic rod, oil it and be ready to go.I especially like the sheath design on the Nying. The blade is fitted safely in the sheath and the knife held in place by a strap that hooks over the brass stud on the handle. While one can dangle this knife from the belt for around camp, I prefer to slip it into a jacket or pack pocket. Some versions of this "fisherman's, Grandfather's or Grandmother's" knife were made with a 2 3/4" blade, but given the beauty and overall utility of the Nying, I think Helle has hit the sweet spot.Helle knives are handmade in the same village in Norway where the company started. If you like the Nying but want a larger carbon blade, check out the "Viking", a recreation of their ancient working knife.

This Is A Great Little Work Knife
This is a great little no frills work knife. The small size makes it very easy to use and the large handle is comfortable to hold in every position that I tried, even with gloves. Mine came sharp and it took only a few minutes with a strop to make it literally razor sharp. While I was expecting it to be a work knife and not a display piece, there were visible grinding striations in the edge grind on one side that I wasn't pleased with, but since it's very sharp and intended for work, and those lines will disappear with several sharpenings, I'll keep the knife as it is. The sheath isn't rigged for secure belt carrying and the knife swings around on the included thong, but by punching two more thong holes in it directly in line 1-2" below the existing holes and running the thong through them also, it's modified to include adequate belt loops that raise the knife and limit the flopping as you move about. One star off for the imperfect grinding - otherwise it's a five star knife that I really like.

Now My Favorite Everyday Carry Knife
First of all, I'm not a knife collector nor expert, but I know a really 'good' knife from a so-so knife. For me, the Nying is great as a neck EDC knife (despite being more apt to roll than lie flat...Might be annoying to some people) Or as another reviewer says, just tuck it in a jacket pocket. Has a short leather thong instead of a belt loop. Has been a trusty companion slicing apples and carving a spoon It came very sharp, and has a nice, good-looking, functional sheath. The handle is well-designed for a smaller knife, and the curly birch wood has a beautiful glow. Maybe more expensive than say, a Mora Scout, but it has a more traditional design and is downright beautiful. [There is a reason this knife and sheath won a 'Nordic Design' award.] I love the looks, I love the functionality. That being said, this is a knife that requires a bit more care cleaning, oiling, and sharpening, if that is a concern for you. Also, if you want a knife that'll open wine bottles, make pancakes, or fix a truck, this isn't it. The Nying is just a nice, smaller, fixed blade knife. But that is all I wanted it for.If you're looking for a large bushcraft or hunting knife, look at the Helle Eggen, Temagami, or similar larger models. But for a camp or daily use knife, the Nying is great. I love mine.

adequate knife, nice pouch, crazy price.
I work with knives as part of my daily life, and have a large collection. For years I have sworn by Opinel knives, but thought I would see if the grass is greener on the other side, and splurged for this Helle knife. It's beautiful, and feels nice in the hand, and comes with a lovely leather pouch, but you are not getting a better knife then an 8eur Opinel. The blade comes sharp(ish) and its relatively quick to sharpen, but I was disappointed with it.

absolut wunderbares Messer(chen)
