I needed a primer on reading music that would prepare me to more competently read, lead sheets and general written music. I’m wanting to work my way through the compositions and transcribed improvisations of others. This book has helped a lot, and the kindle format is great, as the last thing I need is more printed books.

I find this book to be very useful, it's refreshing my mind regarding music and finger exercises

Reading music can mean recognizing and understanding all of the symbols in a sheet of music. This book is quite good for that. It included many symbols I've never seen in 65 years of playing guitar. It is surely comprehensive. The second meaning is to read the musical notation and play or sing the music as written. This book is not likely to get you far along the path to that skill. The last two pages have some drills and that is it.

I bought this for a grandson that wants to be a pro musician. He jokingly referred to this as his gift that gave him homework, lol, but he also said that he really needed the info within.

I'm still working my way through this excellent book and already learning things I never knew about understanding music. I bought both of Mr Carter's books in Kindle versions, and just had to have this one in printed format. I would have bought both, but already have two paperback Music Theory books, but "How to Read Music" is exactly what I needed. One very minor criticism demonstrates the danger of global replace commands: as far as I've read, every occurrence of eighth has been replaced by eight. A small confusion for a rank beginner like me, but thankfully it has not caused any misunderstanding. A darned good book and there should be more writing as clear and easy to understand as Mister Carter's works. My thanks.

Bought it as a gift for someone learning how to read music. Very thorough and easy to follow.
