Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2005 Reporting Services Step by Step

Needs technical review but has a ton of information.
I found the book extremely useful in getting me pointed in the right direction with Reporting Services. I used the book less as a technical reference and more as an overview of how Reporting Services works and what options are available for solving reporting problems in SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).I agree with the other reviewers that the book needs additional technical editing. For example, in Chapter 9 Stacia states that the rs.exe utility can be used with C# and that sample scripts are installed with SQL Server 2005. I have not seen a reference anywhere else on the web that states rs.exe can be used with C# and after installing SQL Server 2005 multiple times with every sample database I could find I did not get any sample scripts in the location specified. If you use the book for an overview of SSRS you will gain many insights into how Reporting Services works but for the detailed technical details I would recommend the MSDN books.

Just what you need to get started
I own a few of the Microsoft "step-by-step" titles and this one lived up to the expectation. You are started out with an overview, then basics, and from there led into the step-by-step setup and layout. Like the other "step-by-step" titles, you are also given a CD loaded with examples. This is your springboard to an intermediate or advanced title. Well worth it.

Microsoft® SQL Server(TM) 2005 Reporting Services Step by Step
Microsoft® SQL Server(TM) 2005 Reporting Services Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) should be the best book in this topic. The reason that made me ranked this book at 4 stars is because this book missed just one sentence to tell their readers the exact folder to copy the source code to or how to modify the path in sql script.

What a waste!
I purchased the book well over a year ago and placed it in my library for future reference. Now that I finally need it to dig into SSRS further, I'm truly disappointed. Besides the well documented script to load the databases not working, I've found plenty of instances where I found myself truly lost in the "Step by Step". I really had to go back time after time to see if I missed something. Low and behold, I didn't miss a thing. This was an extreme waste of valuable time away from projects. What the book is missing is a really good technical review. Long story short, placed this one on the shelf and ordered Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services 2005 by Brian Larson. Now I'm beginning to wonder about my SSAS Step by Step now. Then again, I'll just save my self valuable time and pick up another SSAS anyway. Hope this helps!

Where are the databases
My problem with this book is that the sample CD does not have the Database files required to make the examples work. The Adventure Works file was moved, but is still available. The rs2005sbsDW database does not seem to exist anymore. These are small Databases, and there is only 600mb free on the CD. I bought the CD version of this book so I wouldn't have to hunt the web for the answers.

Excellent Learning Guide
This book, complemented with sample code on an accompanying CD-ROM, provides a comprehensive guide in using SQL Reporting Services - yes, Step By Step as the title says. In addition to the hardcopy, you also get an eBook version in PDF format and therefore your book can travel with you, say on your laptop. If the aim is learning Reporting Services in a well-structured way, there is nothing better than one coming straight from the Horse's mouth (the Horse being Microsoft). If you haven't already installed Reporting Services, be warned that in a certain situation you may experience installation problems. SQL 2005 Reporting Services is a 32-bit software (there is no 64-bit version of it although 64-bit SQL Server 2005 exists) and installing it on 64-bit operating system such as Server 2008 could be painful particularly if there are other applications running under IIS Applications Pools. Reporting Services requires an Application Pool that runs with 32-bit enabled and loading modules by 64-bit and 32-bit applications can be problematic (can be done but one has to put in some time and effort to get this right). For a start, the default IIS Application Pool needs to be set to 32-bit even for SQL Reporting Service feature to show up in the installation. I suggest if possible to steer away from this problem, say going for SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services instead which will serve the same purpose (and more up-to-date) but has no issues with 32-bit/64-bit. On the other hand, if the SQL installation is a stand-alone and for the purpose of this training (preferably in 32-bit version), then everything should go smoothly. An authoritative learning guide and highly recommended (provided SQL Reporting Services is running as it should ;-)
