Plano Gun Guard SE Series Gun Case, Black, Lockable Padlock Tabs for Travel, Gun Cases for Rifles and Gun Accessories

I bought this case from Plano (and one other from another manufacturer) to keep my airguns clean, safe and stored out of the way but accessible when needed again. I was totally tired of using the inadequate cardboard shipping boxes for storage; the rifles could move around freely inside with essentially no protection at all if they fell over or were dropped. That is, they wouldn't be protected unless I spent who knows how much money and time and effort trying to modify them to do a job for which they were never meant. Besides, I had a pumper pistol too, and it arrived in a clear-plastic, molded display container that basically had to be destroyed to get at the pistol and documentation inside, so there isn't even a cardboard box with which to experiment. As for my rifles, even if I managed to convince myself I'd adequately jimmied up the interiors of the cardboard boxes to make them somewhat safer, I'd still have to try to make the boxes themselves more long-lived and sturdier. Even then, I'd ALSO need to come up with some reliable way to be able to repeatedly open and close those boxes on demand. It might have been an interesting exercise in craft-work and maybe even somewhat fun, but I just couldn't see it. Plus, it goes completely against the grain to think I could start off with poor materials and expect to create something to do a job it would never do well, if at all. GIGO. It looks like I'll need to try something else. Altogether, I have three air rifles and one air pistol that need adequate housing, all of which my wife and I very much enjoy and all of which we want to keep clean. safe and out of the way when not in use -- but easy to get at when wanted: two different variable pump air rifles, one CO2 powered semi-automatic air rifle and finally, a variable pump pistol. Originally, my plan was to buy two similarly priced and configured cases from different manufacturers, compare one against the other, then buy one more based on whichever case I liked the best. I hoped one of the three would be able to hold not only a rifle, but the pistol too, but that remained to be seen. It seemed doable to me, so after doing some research online, I found this case from Plano (10470 Gun Guard SE Single Rifle Case, Black, 48 Inches) that turned out to be priced very competitively (the lowest price I could find for a hard case in fact), so I decided to order one and give it a try. Great! The case from Plano turned out to be perfect for my needs, doing everything I wanted and more. Not only will it keep any one of my rifles clean and safe, even when moved around a bit roughly, it actually had enough room and padding inside for two rifles! My two smallest fit without modification and one of them even has a laser sight mounted under the front of the barrel. It's a little snug, but neither rifle is up against the plastic sides or handle of the case, they don't rub up against each other and when the case is closed, they still stay put inside, even when the case is moved around (and I'm disabled and can't get anywhere without a walker, so the cases definitely see some rough handling). Very nice and I didn't have to order another rifle case after all. Making an already great situation even better, while I very much like the second case I bought, it really does accommodate only one rifle and the pistol, so the one Plano case not only saved me a couple of bucks by being the cheaper of the two, it better served my needs by doing the job of two cases, saving me even more dough. Sweet! To be doubly sure those two rifles stay in place no matter what (the case could be knocked over or dropped or something), I'm going to epoxy something to act as strap holders to the bottom interior (two on each end), cut slits for them in the foam padding, then add velcro straps for the barrel and butt stock of each rifle. That way, not only will the sandwiched egg-crate padding hold them in place (which it already does quite well), I'll also be able to strap them down firmly for even more security if they're dropped or something. I'm not planning to use the cases for anything other than basically simple storage in my home, with personal automobile travel somewhat remotely possible (I am disabled and basically just don't get out anymore), so this Plano rifle case turned out to be perfect for my purposes (and the other case is awesome too). I couldn't be happier with my purchases. For similar light duty anywhere, this Plano rifle case is perfect and a bargain besides. Highly recommended.

This is excellent for it's price. I payed nearly 2x for a softbag... Does it flex, yes, is it hard plastic, no. Does it fit my standard American Rifle with a 3-9 scope in it? Barely. I have to fine a special angle to give me less than 1/4inch from pressing against the sides of the case. Does it bow out a little with my rifle in it, yep. Can I fit other stuff in it, yes. Will it protect my guns to throw them in the trunk to go to the range (or to the woods..), yes. Can I afford to buy several of them for taking multiple to the range, yes. People talk about not using it for shipping on a plane. I would if it didn't have the scope on it, or a shorter sight. It's a metal gun in a protective case. It'll be fine. Worst case? Optical sights need to be adjusted. If you have have a relic or have a gun that is... delicate... this may not be the case for you. Otherwise, this is an excellent value for toting your rifle around in and it's plenty long for longer guns or throwing things like mags in there with it. I'm very happy with my purchase.

I think the people who are overly critical of this case are demanding a little too much. I have five of these cases for transporting several long-arms to the range for fun with friends and family, and they work great for that purpose. Sure, I've got a few Pelican cases and they are the Rolls Royce of cases (or Humvee of cases, if you like) in my opinion, but to put things in perspective: You can buy TEN of these Plano cases for the price of ONE Pelican case and-- if all you're doing is taking a few rifles or shotguns to the range and back-- these will probably work fine most of the time. There are four things that I don't particularly like about these cases, but they aren't deal-breakers: 1. The case has "Gun Guard" printed right on the side. This makes it unacceptable for air travel (my understanding is that the FAA doesn't want containers containing guns to be labeled as such), and it also draws unnecessary attention to the case. That being said, very few people would probably think that the case contained a Mariachi guitar, a really long drill, or a concert harp, but it'd be nice if the case were a little more discrete. 2. The foam inside the case always falls down (and sometimes out) when the case is empty. This can be fixed with glue or tape, but it's a shame the company doesn't just fix that problem at the factory. 3. There are three spots for locks, and there should be a fourth on the other side of the handle. There's one lock hole on one side of the handle, but not the other. With some force, you can get the case open enough to access accessories or the trigger of a rifle/shotgun, although you likely can't get the entire firearm out. Still, one extra lock hole would make the case much more secure from children. The case is never going to be a substitute for a good gun safe, but with this one extra place for a padlock, you could-- as they say-- keep honest people honest. 4. The cases come with a little plastic flashing. Spillover from the injection plastic molding process. It's not a big deal and can be cut away with a knife, but it's still a little cheap looking. Overall, I like these cases. They are a good option for people on a budget, and any hard case is certainly better than a cardboard box or long wool sock.

Very pleased with the quality of construction. I own 4 of these cases, housing a Mossberg Pump 12 GA Shotgun, an HP995TS with a red dot sight, a Marlin .22 with BSA scope and a Mossberg .22 plinkster with a BSA scope. All fit very well in each case with plenty of room for additional magazines and misc. items. My Bushmaster AR15A3M4 factory case is actually flimsier and is smaller than these cases. These are not rated for shipping or transport, they are for carrying to/from Range and storage. Excellent oversized foam padding compresses well to snug contents. They stand well as pictured handle up, and also stand well on end with barrel skyward. If you are shipping a rifle or need something to transport it unattended, buy a lockable metal hard case. I've read reviews of people thinking of using these type of cases to house very expensive scoped rifles or trying to use them for transport--if you own a $2500 rifle, expect to pay more than $24 to protect it. As with any poly cases, their rigidity depends on the weight of the item stored. When properly closed, these cases can sustain a drop from hand carry level without popping open. These are great cases for the money for everyday rifles, with plenty of room for large scoped weapons (approx. 45" x 7 1/2" interior room, 6 1/4" at handle). Note: Just added an order for my 6th case, as my collection grows, these are still the best cases for storage and carry.

For a sub $20 case this works for me. I bought this case pretty much to check out the quality. This case is flimsy but gets better after the rifle is in it. I don't plan on beating this case up a lot back and forth the range. I was able to fit 2 .22 rifles in the case. I had the spray adhesive the foam in the 2 halfs first. Which I luckily enough has some laying around. I wish I woulda done the bottom upside down. But i didn't know at first id add foam on top of that. After spraying the foam in I put a rifle In and shook it around and moved a little. So I figured I'd make additional foam cutout. Then I decided to make 2 guns fit. All in all it's great for the money. You just got to expect to improve upon it. And personally I wouldn't use these for long distance travel or shipping with adding padding. I added some pictures for reference. The shotgun pictured is a Remington 870.

Pro - Cheap cheap cheap and the latches aren't bad. Con - Flimsy construction, thin foam that you will need to re-glue in place, the carry handle isn't great, cannot fit a rifle with the bolt open. I got this for my .22 Marlin plinkster and Nikon scope. They say you should spend 10% the cost of what you are transporting on the case - so in hindsight I should have sprung for a case in the $25-30 range. On the plus side the case fits the rifle and high-mount 4x32 scope and should be fine for taking it to the range without worrying any hoplophobes. Also, because it technically locks (I say "technically" because a pair of scissors or a pen knife could get you in this case in seconds) it should allow me to comply with FOPA when traveling out of state. Some people have complained about the latches - I found they actually work quickly and easily. Did I mention it cost less than $20?!? On the down side the plastic and foam are thin - expect little to no crush resistance. The foam fell off both sides, but a few seconds with the hot glue gun should resolve that. The handle is formed by the two sides meeting but they don't quite lock into place so it's not a solid surface to grip on - hard to explain but mildly annoying when carrying. Finally, since the case itself is thin, as is the foam, I found it doesn't close well if I leave the bolt of the rifle open - which is how I like to transport it. I either have to close the bolt (which still causes the side to buldge) or remove it. Bottom line - if you are looking for something just good enough to get your rifle from the car to the range inconspicuously, this aught to do. If you plan on traveling or transporting your gun a longer distance - drop a few extra bucks for something more solid.

This is a gun case. You put your rifle and/or shotgun in it. The case is a hard plastic adequate enough to protect your case/shotgun for activities such as normal storage and transportation. The foam is also adequate enough to protect your rifle/shotgun from damage. The foam is not glued to the case so if you desire this simply apply glue to the case and foam. The case opens and closes just fine. It has holes on the outside where you can affix a normal key or combination lock if desired. The case is about 52 inches long so for your longer guns you might need to purchase a different model. If you plan on purchasing a gun case that does everything mentioned in this paragraph then it is a 5 star case for the price. This gun case is NOT the equivalent of a $1,000 case from a designer manufacturer. I don't understand the reviews where they thought they were going to get that kind of quality for a twenty dollar bill. Yes, I would probably not put my $5,000 big game rifle is this case then check it to fly out to Montana for a hunt. Yes, I would probably not mail my $3,000 competition shotgun in this case either. What I would do is use it for everyday storage and transportation in the trunk of my car. No, if my gun loading technique was literally throwing the case in the bed of my truck I would not use this case. Yes, if my gun loading technique was to gently place the case in the bed of a truck this will suit you just fine. If you are carrying this to the range and drop it from waist height it should protect your gun. If you are a mountain man carrying this up the side of a rock filled hill to go plinking in the middle of the wilderness it will probably not protect your gun. Please let me know if these scenarios are not descriptive enough for those out there that don't understand the nature of a low price gun case and I will attempt to add more. And, yes, as other reviewers suggested you can make this case look like one of those cases that costs a few hundred dollars. All that it takes is about 2 dollars and a like bit of arts and crafts time. I flipped the foam so the eggshell side was facing inward, covered the plain side with red felt using a spray adhesive and then used the same adhesive to glue to the foam to the inside of the case. It now looks like a slightly more expensive case for little cost and almost no time. I hope this review helps someone out there. If so please mark it accordingly.

I have been using Plano Gun Guard cases for 15 years without any issues. They do a great job of protecting my firearms at an affordable price. And they are not too balky when loaded into a vehicle. They are also less weight than other cases available which is nice if frequently transporting your firearms. Mine get a lot of use without any issues. Highly recommend.
