Ce CD comprend 23 titres dont de nombreuses compositions personnelles (Joe South). Il débute en force avec 3 hits « Down in the boondocks » (#09 US et #38 UK) et « I knew you when » (#14 US) en 1965 suivi de « I’ve got to be somebody » (#38 US) en 1966. Les morceaux suivants sont également excellents mais avec un succès modeste notamment « Yo-yo » (#117 US) qui sera un énorme succès par les Osmonds Brothers en 1971 (#03 US). Il faut atteindre « Hush » (#52 US) en 1967 pour retrouver cet énorme succès en France qui sera interprété magistralement par Deep Purple en 1968 dans leur premier album. A découvrir l’excellent ballade « Storybook children » de 1968, le plaisant « Gabriel » ou une autre ballade captivante « Nobody loves you but me ». De nouveau un hit de 1969 « Cherry Hill Park » (#15 US) suivi du bon « Me without you ». Une bonne reprise d’un morceau de Paul McCartney « Every night » et une agréable ballade avec « (Don’t let the sun set on you in) Tulsa ». Les derniers morceaux sont agréables notamment « Child of mine ».C’est une excellente compilation qui donne un parfait échantillon de la carrière de Billy Joe Royal.

Billy Joe Royal was a very successful singer who helped define the Southern rock/pop scene in the 1960's. Great soulful pop songs delivered by a very distinctive vocalist. It helps that Billy Joe Royal had great songwriters like Joe South working with him. This album gives you a great compilation of Billy's best songs and big hits. If you are a Billy Joe Royal fan, or just curious about this part of the 1960's music scene, this album is worth owning. For more artists in the 60's Southern genre, also look into Joe South, Classics IV, Tommy Roe, etc.

Incredible sound, taken from 1st gen masters. If you didn't know the newest song was recorded in 1972 you would think it was recorded yesterday. If you have even heard of Billy Joe Royal or not this is a must have. 10 stars! "These are not my people "brought me to tears, what a flashback.
