Be the Better Broker, Volume 1: So You Want to Be a Broker?

I just finished reading Dustan Woodhouse’s “Be the Better Broker” and I read it more attentively than my licensing text book of ~750 pages absorbing everything he has written. I also found it to be more resourceful than my text book!!!It is indeed commendable that one of Canada’s senior mortgage professionals has taken the time (he spent his summer weekends) and effort to write in such depth and share so unselfishly on the mortgage brokering profession. The purpose of writing this book comes out clear – not to profit but to give back and educate. I have read almost everything that Dustan has written on his extremely informative blogs - http://dustanwoodhouse.ca/blog & http://ourexpert.ca/ - and hence the value this book brings to its readers is no surprise. How refreshing it is to read a book that, for once, does not have baits or claims like “secrets of mortgage brokering” or “the millionaire mortgage broker”! It simply contains all of what it takes to be successful in a profession – the right attitude, the right skillset and the right approach. The book in fact is for anyone intending to pursue a professional calling (not just mortgage brokering). There’s a takeaway on every page of the book – it’s packed with insights drawn from his own practice, it points you to his list of readings & resources and it contains processes that can be implemented effectively. In addition, the contents will inspire you and provide a glimpse into the mind and psyche of a successful professional. He has charted the way to success for the reader – the inspiration is in implementing it in our professional lives.Dustan is one of those who have a gift of expression in presenting his thoughts and ideas logically and with such clarity that the material in the book flows very well. At times, reading the book seemed like a dialogue as your queries would be addressed in the next para / page! This is one of those books that is very difficult to put down.I will revisit this book and will gift copies to those for whom I care. I recommend this book as a must read for all those who are serious about their careers. The rewards are IMMENSE.I very much look forward to reading volume 2 of this series.

I'm six months into being a license Broker (cap) in BC and though I wish this was out before I started in the business, I have still profited. For me the greatest gift from the book are: Dustan's attitude toward work, attitude toward brokering and his great love of learning. I too had too had to learn to learn when studying for the exam (I used among a many things "The Little Book of Talent by Daniel Coyle - Amazon and Mental Case The Study app for Mac) . I too had no financial industry background (I was told that was a good thing as I would not have to UNLEARN bad habits). I'm 23% through the Kindle version and have already ordered six books he's suggested in Be The Better Broker. Very, very good book Dustan and very good advice. I really look forward to all of the books to follow. I know that all of us who take this job seriously will profit in so many ways.

Just got my license last month and will be leaving a safe and lucrative career for my life long passion - the mortgage industry! This book is amazing and is very easy to read. Full of knowledge and real life experiences that will surely boost your chances of success in this space. I have already purchased volume 2 and can't hardly wait to read it! My hat goes off to Dustan for a well written book. This is exactly what I needed as I start this new chapter in my life. Thank you for taking the time to write it.

Don Carlson - This is a fantastic book that encapsulates the though process one should take when thinking about pursuing the mortgage brokering career. Great book, great series! Buy them all and be a better broker

Its not often that you get to pick the brains of a top producer, especially in an industry thats quite new. Dustan's book shares some of the secrets of his success and it is a must read for all brokers, new or experienced. This book is well worth the cost and the time to read. Dustan truly practices what he preaches - there is no resource like this for our industry. I can understand why he's a top producing broker. I appreciated his courage and openness in sharing the challenges that he faced starting out in 2008. It is these challenges that motivated him to become a better version of himself and do whatever it takes to get the job done. I have much respect for him. Can't wait to read Volume 2!

I'm currently doing my mortgage agent license and this book just solidified my desire in jump starting this new career. I'm not looking to get in to this business just for the commission but to actually be a reliable mortgage agent by doing good and working in the best interest of the client. I respect that Dustan put in good examples, good suggestions on creating your CRM, and just overall how to BE the Better Broker. This book is gold I'm literally buying all books ! Great book to read getting into the industry

This book is very easy to read even if you’re a rookie in this business. Simple language, tones of important tips on starting up a new career. I love the amount of book references. Will definitely look into some of them. Can’t wait to start reading Volume 2.

Finally the Canadian Mortgage Industry has in place three solid books on how to become a mortgage broker. Dustan's books offer fabulous coaching, provides a down to earth guide, what to avoid and what to practice in one's day-to-day business. All three books are an absolute must read. I cannot recommend these books enough. Thank you Dustan !

Purchased this as was doing research into possibly studying to become a Mortgage Broker. The book was a fantastic read, I am now in the process of doing the diploma course and will be purchasing volume II to read shortly.I would recommend this book to people who are thinking about going down the Broking path and also to the qualified Brokers out there.

Dustan Woodhouse has written an excellent guide to becoming the better broker, raising the bar on customer service and satisfaction. Both the new broker and the veteran will enjoy and learn from this well written book. Dustan is funny and informative. He has supplied the reader with practical tips, scripts and practices that will boost their performance and improve their enjoyment of the mortgage industry. Buy a copy for sure!
