The Country Girl

Odd that William Holden saves this movie
Grace Kelly was not so much an actress as a beautiful woman who knew her lines - except for "High Society" where she delivers a wonderfully comic, true portrayal. Bing Crosby was the best, when he stayed in his droll, witty lane. But in this film, both Grace and Bing are overwhelmed by their sense of the "importance" and the "tragic depth" of the source-play by Clifford Odets. So they overact in the scenes where the characters should seem to be trying NOT to reveal what they are feeling. But the actor who achieves the perfect balance between showing emotion without emoting, is cinema-hunk William Holden. It's a cool story [spoiler alert], of the producer (Holden) who is trying to protect his star (Crosby) from the star's smothering, critical wife (Kelly) and instead falls in love with that wife. It's a double-dealing story though, because we are told (1) that Bing's troubles really were caused by the death of his son years ago (caused by his carelessness), but also (2) that Bing just used that as an excuse so he could cover up his real problems - insecurity and alcoholism. But that attempt by the writers to have it both ways can be forgiven, because something else keeps us engaged: our desire for the sworn enemies (Kelly and Holden) to give in to their attraction, which they very nearly do. Anyway, IMO, Holden should have won the Oscar, not Kelly. In any case it's an absorbing film, and reveals a whole lot about what happens behind the curtain of stage plays.

Very solid movie
If you like old movies, then this is a gem. Grace Kelly plays a domineering wife who pushes her failed husband, Bing Crosby, to succeed. Kelly's role is totally out of her comfort zone of glamor and class, wow! And der Bingle, oh my, he rocks as a timid washed-up performer. You feel sorry for the old boy. Relaxing watch with excellent writing. No special effects or explosions.

Strong Performances by Grace Kellly, Bing Crosby and William Holden
Nominated for seven Academy Awards with two wins, Grace Kelly for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and George Seaton for Best Writing Screenplay, Country Girl is a tour de force of cinematography. While not winning, it was also nominated for: Best Actor, Best Director, Best Picture, Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction. Kelly and Crosby turn in exceptional performances as exemplified by Kelly's win and Crosby's nomination. While shot in 1954 the film has a very contemporary feel, much more than say Casablanca, which was shot more than a decade earlier. I strongly recommend that you consider watching this film, both Kelly and Crosby are well out of their customary roles and William Holden turns in a solid performance. If I have one criticism of the film, it is that the Title does not seem to really fit the story line; I have pondered esoteric meanings but I still fail to make a connection. Nevertheless, this movie is definitely a good watch; I whole heartedly recommend it.

A Country Girl and her Drunken Boy
This entertaining black and white musical drama stars Bing Crosby as a weak willed alcoholic actor who refuses to accept responsibility. Grace Kelly is his intellectual but enabling wife, and William Holden is the producer who believes in Bing's abilities despite his glaring defects of character. Bing sings (naturally) a few Ira Gershwin/Harold Arlen songs, but the drama arising when Bing accepts a starring role in a musical is the main thing. The ending is predictable given the morality of the times, but it's a pleasure to see these three fine actors a work in a show about a show. Grace Kelly won an Oscar for her performance.

Great movie
Excellent movie, involving plot, fine performances by Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby. This is not the usual glamorous role that Grace Kelly played in her movies, but I think this was her acting at its best. She received the Best Actress Oscar for her performance. Highly recommended!

Oscar for Grace Kelly, best actress
Well, Grace Kelly is my all-time favorite actress so I had to own this one. In my opinion, she was excellent in her role and I'm glad she won. The movie itself was rather slow and depressing for me. If she wasn't in the film, I would have easily nodded off more than a few times. But I suppose there is one lesson in it. A guy obviously needs to man-up if he wants to hold on to a good woman like Grace Kelly. Opposite her in the movie is Bing Crosby. He's a talented individual but plays a very pathetic character here. The movie was nominated for several awards, including best picture. So for it's time, I guess it was good, but for my taste I couldn't quite give it 4 stars. Maybe it's better than 3 stars to other viewers.

A Neglected Classic
I was amazed at how fresh this older film seems even today. While the tale of an alcoholic washed up singer may not have the same appeal as Crosby's "White Christmas" he has never given a finer performance. It is certainly Academy Award material. In fact, Grace Kelly did win Best Actress for her role as Crosby's long-suffering wife. William Holden is also excellent as a director who encourages Crosby to attempt a Broadway comeback. A predictable love triangle ensues along with Bing's struggles to stay on the wagon. This is a crisp drama that will reward fans of these fine actors as well as discovering a Bing who gets to show off hidden talents. Based on a play by Clifford Odets. Highly recommended.
