The Best of James Herriot: Favourite Memories of a Country Vet

I grew up with this exact book and when I moved to the UK I gave my copy away as a gift and to cut down on luggage, thinking I could grab another at a charity shop someday. Not so easy in lockdown and I really missed being able to just read these funny, moving stories at will. Glad to find it for under £5 and delivered so fast. No dust jacket but what's inside is more important. Especially nice now that I have visited these places in person. The photo sections, I appreciate more as an adult. They and the margin info make this compilation a real treasure for any animal loving house.

I may have read this in a bad time, as I had just lost my four-legged friend of 14 years and, right at the beginning of the book there's a similar story. But, actually, I thoroughly enjoyed this (massive) account of James Herriot's career as a country vet. My dad grew up in the same kind of small village, surrounded by meadows with cows, horses and other animals most children nowadays only see in movies or pedagogical farms. I was reading and being reminded of all the stories dad told me while I was growing up. Next I shall lend him the book, as I'm sure it will be a nostalgic and sweet reminder of a time that is long gone.

good for those with a short attention span, but really to appreciate this wonderful rendition you have to get the whole series of books. They are timeless.

Wonderful gift for any fan of James Herriot, but also for those who are interested in the beautiful county of Yorkshire.
