Tea With The Dames [Blu-ray]

Lovely and sad at the same time
Watching these women demonstrate their love for each other was a really beautiful thing. I wanted to hear about their lives but I was not prepared for how honest they would all be about this stage of their journey (no pun intended). Of course we all will die but you can see in their faces and hear in the conversation that they're getting weary. We all expect so much from Maggie Smith and Judi Dench, especially, but watching this makes me realize how unfair it is. Their careers have been forged from a dedication and love for the craft of acting, not because they wanted fame or accolades. I appreciate that they shared this with us and I'm glad they have each other.

I only liked 2 of the 4 women
Never watched anything Judi Dench was in until the Marigold Hotel movies, only because Maggie Smith was in them. Never, never watch Joan Plowright. I thoroughly enjoyed Eileen Atkins in Doc Martin. Eileen and Maggie were the only two worth listening to. Joan Plowright should never have been included. I think they only had her there so they could discuss Lawrence Olivier.

Not what I expected
This is a nice video with some stories by the great ladies. I love these ladies and am happy to have the video but it rather drug out in places. Glad to have it but don't watch it like I thought I would. The ladies seemed embarrassed at times and reluctant to divulge much but that is totally understandable.

Not as great as expected
The format was wrong. Would have been better if the women just sat around a table or living room talking to each other, revealing their opinions & stories.

Wonderful insights...watch more than once
I love this amusing and interesting documentary with these 4 legendary ladies of the theater and movies. Clearly aimed more to the British audience than the US, it makes references to performances that the US audience would be unaware of. This is why I recommend watching it a second or third to catch some references you might not get the first time! Eileen Atkins is probably the least known to US audiences since she did not do many major movies that were popular in the US, although Joan Plowright (married to Laurence Olivier) isn't too well known here either. No matter; all 4 had numerous brilliant, and acclaimed stage performances in England. Maggie Smith and Judi Dench are probably the most well known here in the states. No matter. Don't let the negative reviews keep you from watching the interesting and funny moments of this amazing documentary.

Absolutely delightful presentation
To clear the air regarding "tea" references previously posted from British-challenged reviewers; British "TEA" refers to a light snack and/or drinks surrounded with ample gossip. These "Dames" (the term officially laid upon them by Monarchy) do it right. Water, lemonade, cuppa, and the finale as typical of afternoon tea, champagne. The real issue remaining, where are the scones? What a delight to sit to tea with these overachievers of theater, TV, and film. Oh the jolly good memories they did share. Fears, spouses, physical frailties, loathings, past script lines, and some highlights from life. It's all so beautiful and Delightful, like the Dames themselves, with a Capital D. They were indeed candid. Let their hair down, so to speak. They are all endearing ladies of successful careers that show during this unscripted documentary that they are each human, down-to-earth, great ladies. Each are like the granny that lived next door, well if that granny had a star-studded, A-level dramatic career. After eighty-something jolly good minutes you just want to hug each one. 3 of the 4 yet work, sharing with the world their talents. Throughout the ladies' discussion over multiple topics, archival footage and photos are presented to help visualize the stories being told. The result is magical, like being able to see into the brilliant minds of the extraordinary Four Dames. So fun to see them fall into fits of chuckles. Eileen, Judi, Joan, and Maggie; that's right, you sit to tea with the Queens of British showmanship on a first-name basis.Viewers get emotional memories, belly-laugh humor, actress insight, and SHD SUBTITLES.I can't say enough of the wonder of this DVD. A keeper to watch repeatedly with a spo' o' tea.Is there anything really wrong in having "Tea with the Dames" with no teapot in sight?

Anyone who has enjoyed watching their work over the years will love this, especially if you are of their vintage. You will laugh, you will mourned list youth but most of all you will be with "old friends". God Bless them all & may they stay with us for a long time.
