Intensity: A Novel

Intensity is truly intense!
(Waring Spoilers) Chyna Shepard, the hard childhood-ed, hard-shelled, criminal psychology student. She and her best friend go on a road trip to her friend's family’s farm home. Chyna had never really had a friend and had been just a survivor her whole life. On the first night there, she hears screaming coming from outside of her door. Instinctively, she quickly goes under her bed as she hears footsteps slowly making their way to her door. A tall man walks into the room and looks around. The man then takes another look and goes back downstairs. Chyna, who then followed him from out of her room, started to search around the upstairs to see where everyone was. She found the mom and dad slaughtered in their rooms. She walks downstairs to see that her best friend is tied up downstairs. Next thing Chyna knows her friend is in the arms of the man limp and walking into his motor home. She followed him into the motor home to find out how to stop him. She found her friend dead and her journey continued. She went through many trials, found out he had a girl in his basement, and was determined to save her. She had used her situation to try to at least save someone. The story will then go on for her to try to accomplish her goal without dying herself. Chyna was easily my favorite character as she was the hero and main protagonist. However I really enjoyed reading about Vess. He was the serial killer maniac who was tormenting Chyna. I thought his character was one of the most compelling things about the book, just how interesting he kept the book in my hands. The book isn’t exactly relatable in terms of the situation, however it showcased the thoughts and feelings I would have if I was in the same situation. I feel that a lot of times in books the main character makes very stupid decisions that I would never make, but in this story Chyna is a very good decision maker. The characters can be fairly reliable as well. She has a tough upbringing and that upbringing can drag her down in life at some points. This could be very relatable to someone who has had that type of upbringing, but not me personally. Now, for the good stuff. My opinion on this book is incredibly high. I walked into this book with very high expectations, and they were met and in fact succeeded. I was promised a very scary, gut wrenching, intense read and it was given. This book does an incredible job of letting you know how the characters feel, and switches perspectives many times. For example, you spend 2/3s of the book with Chyna, and the other third with Vess. This explains why characters' decisions are so accurate because I can read their thought process. Some books fail in doing this, they have characters make spontaneous decisions and as a reader I’m expected to just accept that. This book leaves no room for unreasonable storytelling and never leaves you wondering why a character would do something. Although this is one of the best books I’ve read, there are some minor issues I have. First of all, during some points of the book the author can go into these long description sessions with our characters. For example, Chyna goes into a car that is only used once in the whole book. The author then proceeds to spend 3-5 minutes of reading time describing the car. Don’t get me wrong I’m all for descriptive writing but this book took it to the next level a few times. This with a few other very minor flaws are all I can say bad about this book. This is a must read for me, and one of the best I’ve read from this author.I highly recommend the book to anyone who can get their hand on it. It will keep you interested for hours upon hours and make you look behind your back in frightening fear. I recommend this book to anyone who is ready for an adventure of fear and suspense. For a more mature audience, this book can be very vulgar and not for the weak stomach. Overall, this book is one of the best I’ve ever read, and Intensity is truly Intense

Good novel of psych terror and a woman's struggle to survive
The book gets better as you get further into it. Characters were well developed. As I read into the book I found myself reading a higher percentage each night.I did jointly listen with an audible release. I'm not positive but think it might have been in the Plus catalogue.

It's supposed to be a nice relaxing weekend
Chyna Shepard and Laura Templeton are college schoolmates and friends. They're both going to Laura's parents house to visit with them for the weekend. It's supposed to be a nice relaxing weekend, but when Chyna hears an intruder in the night, plans soon turn array. Chyna quickly turns into survival mode when she suspects an intruder. Having been sheparded around most of her young life with a neglectful mother and her mother's abusive boyfriends, Chyna knows how to run and hide to survive. Her instincts tell her when to hide and when to move and serve her pretty well. The intruder, Edglar Vess, appears to be a very efficient killing machine. When Chyna is able to get to the other rooms in the house, she discover the Templetons dead and posed for gruesome effect. Chyna is determined to find out who the killer is and ensure he pays for the destruction he's caused. It will take all her courage, strength, and determination to make it through and come out alive. The book delivered on its promise, it really was an intense ride. Edglar Vess is definitely a messed up guy. He likes to live with intensity and doesn't value pleasure over pain. They are all sensations that should be taken in. He loves to inflict psychological and physical pain on his victims and appears to be very good at it. Very disturbing. There were many times during the book I couldn't believe that Chyna was pressing on. It was like a horror movie where you scream at the girl to run out of the house, but instead she runs up the stairs. Chyna kept perpetually putting herself back in danger to get to the truth. I thought it would really get on my nerves, but ended up not being too bad. Over the top a bit, but definitely a suspenseful ride.

Intense, Wildly Choatic, and Beautifully Wriitten
I was told about this book, some years back by a friend of mine. I've always been a fan of Dean Koontz's books, they keep me on the edge of my seat, but this book, it sat in the back of my mind until I finally decided to pick it up and read. I was not disappointed. It has taken me almost a month to finish it with my busy schedule and not very much down time, but this past few days, I haven't been able to put it down. There were points I realized i wasn't breathing. I fell in love with Chyna and her resilience even in the the WORST moments, moments when I almost waited for her to give up, but she never did. It blew me away. Even the flash backs had me feeling some of things she felt. I was engulfed in this book.Even the Antagonist, Edgler Vess had me questioning so many things. The difference in his POV and Chyna's were so different but also so alike. Vess was such a dynamic character, strange and mysterious. This book was such a pleasure to read.If you are a fan of Thrillers, edge of your seat moments and valor and resilience! I highly recommend it! Oh it was so good.

3 days!
I haven’t read a great book in a while but started this one and couldn’t put it down for 3 days.It was a great read and exactly what I was looking for- a book that made me keep my iPad charged and bringing it with me in case I found a few minutes here and there.Interestingly, I thought I knew the English language but encountered at least 10 words I never heard before.

Absolutely fantastic
This is one of the best 📚 books that I have ever read. Dean Koontz is a master of creating a book so all encapsulating that you are drawn into the story & can't leave before getting to the very last page. I have read his books before, & by far this has been the best.

Awesome book
I read this with my heart in my throat. I've yet to come across such a gutsy heroine (Chyna) and she may just be the twin sister of 'Alex' (Pierre Lemaitre's lead in his book of the same name). You want such a friend in your life for real, who has your back and is willing to go to such lengths to exact revenge on your behalf. Revenge is so underrated at times. The sicko who rapes and kills her friend is your worst nightmare come true. I was so glad that he gets what he deserves, several times over, at the end of the book. But all the stuff in between is truly mind-blowing too. This is my second favourite Dean Koontz book after 'Life Expectancy', and I totally recommend it.
