So this plays Game Boy Advance games as well as DS ones??

yes it plays any generation of Gameboy games including gameboy color

Does this need an sd card? or is that only for the new updated ds systems?

Ds lite don't have slots for SD cards.

Does this come with any games loaded on it??

I recommend you buy a R4, and put him many games. I did and it works great

What is the best age range for a DS? I have a 4.5 year old boy

You can just replace the screen. On Amazon you can search "ds replacement screen". I recommend getting a glass one because that one, if you use the original stylus, is immune to scratches. Also, there is this game that teaches addition and subtraction. It's learn math and it's an original DS game. It goes up to fifth grade and I played it as a kid a LOT. I learned so may skills from it that I can't help but recommend it. Also, if you ever want a bigger screened DS, I'd say the DSi XL. Have a blessed day and I hope I helped.
