Spend a December evening with Judy Garland! This episode from her CBS- TV show, recorded December 6, 1963, and aired on the 22nd, captures the great entertainer and her kids, Liza Minnelli and Lorna and Joe Luft, in a one-hour songfest taking place in the family living room (one large enough to accommodate 12 crooning carolers, six strutting Santas, three charming children, two pop stars, and a film legend named Judy--well, you get the idea). Garland is mostly a spectator, encouraging the 17-year-old Liza (who appears somewhat uncomfortable when not singing or dancing) and the younger kids, Lorna (who displays a big voice on "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" and went on to have her own performing career) and the less-assured Joe (who sings one of the many nonseasonal selections, "Where Is Love," during which an anxious Garland can be glimpsed mouthing the words along with him). But she does sing two of her most memorable film songs--"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "Over the Rainbow"--plus "Little Drops of Rain" (from Gay Purr-ee) and she can still kick up her heels. Even one of her flubs produces one of the best moments: she joins Mel Tormé at the piano for his "Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)," and when she botches the lyric, he gently chides her, "Close!" Also on hand are Liza's "beau," Tracy Everitt, a dancer on the series, and clean-cut pop star Jack Jones, who sings his Grammy-winning hit "Lollipops and Roses" as well as a nice a cappella version of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" with Tormé. The remastered DVD allows the original black and white to shine, and a new 5.1 surround sound track is available along with the original mono track. --David Horiuchi

a perennial favorite in glorious black and white
This VHS tape of The Judy Garland Christmas Show is in glorious black and white; and it boasts the original, vintage commercials which give me the strong feeling that I'm actually back in December 1963 watching this unfold as a television special! Judy performs wonderfully in this installment of her weekly television show; and her three children Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft and Joe Luft also perform which is very sweet. Look also for performances by Jack Jones, Tracy Everitt, carolers--and more! The set was carefully designed to be as faithful a copy as CBS could make of Judy's real life home in California at the time; they clearly spared no expense to accomplish this--the set is terrific! Judy begins the show by singing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" from "Meet Me in St. Louis" while Lorna and Joe look on; and it's all very touching. Judy even performs the song within a window frame just the way Vincente Minnelli had her do it back when they made the movie; and it all works so well. There are a couple of versions of "Consider Yourself" with Judy and her children; and another highlight would definitely be Liza and her "beau" Tracy Everitt doing a fine job of performing "Steam Heat."Look for Jack Jones to "arrive" at Judy's house and sing excellent renditions of "Wouldn't It Be Loverly" from "My Fair Lady" as well as "Lollipops and Roses." Awesome! Liza performs "Alice Blue Gown" with Tracy nearby as she sings this to perfection--and beyond! However, you can tell there was tension between Judy and Mel Tormé; Judy intentionally sings "to see if rainbows really know how to fly" from "The Christmas Song" instead of "to see if reindeer really know how to fly." Judy makes another slight botch of a line when singing this song by Mel Tormé and Bob Wells, too. I certainly don't think Judy and Mel got along very well because it's not like Judy to make mistakes like that--she was too driven and too much of a perfectionist for these "flubs" to be accidental. In addition, there are two excellent medleys; one is more secular and the other is more religious. Carolers appear on the set as does a chorus line of Santa Clauses inviting Judy to dance along with them the second time around! The show closes with a splendid surprise, too.You may think that I've given it all away but I assure you I haven't. The vintage commercials helped to transport me back in time to when this was originally broadcast; and that's grand. Moreover, the set of Judy's home creates a sense of intimacy that is touching, to say the least. Get this, watch it and enjoy even more than what I've described in this review!

A TRUE HOLIDAY GEM!!
This is such a delightful video! I much prefer this VHS version since it not only includes the full original commercials, but it also emulates how one would actually see it on TV back in the 60's, with the slightly rougher picture quality in black & white. The video transfer is quite good and the audio is nice and crisp. The many performances throughout this episode are brilliant. Judy opens the show by singing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" to her children Lorna and Joe by a window. The guest appearances by Mel Torme and his choir, and Jack Jones totally knock it right out of the park. It's amazing how much Liza sounds similar to her mother when she sings her numbers, and little Lorna REALLY belts out a jazzy 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town' that I quite enjoyed! The days of these variety shows are truly missed since they don't make 'em like this anymore! We are now plagued with bad reality television shows sad to say. This is a very nice family special to watch, as it makes you feel right at home. From the style of singing to the quality of the music, everything about this classic is truly a gem.Judy was fantastic throughout the show enjoying every moment as you can tell, and you can clearly see how much she adored her children. She may have lived a very hectic, rough and short life, but she was a VERY funny lady with an incomparable talent who left her much needed delicate footprint in the history of entertainment. Though not noted on the box, she closes the show with a rendition of 'Over The Rainbow' that is so beautiful, and by far is one of her best.I highly recommend this video to any Judy fan, as well to Christmas lovers in general, since it's an annual holiday treasure in my home to view and hopefully will be in yours also.

great christmas show
Remember all the great christmas shows every year? Of course you do! I was probably 2 or 3 when this origionally aired. I had seen it shown on t.v. in the early 80s and thought it was wonderful. Just like all the great christmas shows this one had great guest stars, Jack Jones, and Mel Torme. Judys 3 kids even had solos. I bought it on vhs and the best part is that the origional commercials are left in. They are just as good as the show. Remember the contact cold pills? "Oh,Oh....cold coming on, take contact". So Great. I recently bought this special on dvd and unfortunately the commercials have been removed. But it is still a great show, I raised my children on it , who are in their early 20s now, and they look forward to watching this every year.

An annual Christmas "must-see"
There is no one like Judy, even 45 years after her death. She is surely the greatest all-around entertainer ever, and her Christmas Show is the proof: her singing, her wit, her love for her kids, her rapport with her peers (even Mel Torme!). As for the "flubs," that's part of the charm--no slick Hollywood product here (but wonderfully reproduced on DVD). It's all real, from the sound glitches to son Joe talking in the middle of "Over the Rainbow" to Judy (deliberately, I'm convinced, to get back at Melvin) singing "to see if rainbows really know how to fly" and giving Mel a look that could kill. We have watched it every year since buying the VHS at Tower Video (yes, that long ago), and now have a tradition of a repeat viewing with friends. This is a show for those who really love music and great talent. Buy it.
