That nineties sound! As a collector of over 700 cds mostly hip hop. I would consider this to be an underground classic. A DMX flow with a Wu tang sound.

"My name is NINE and your name is MUD!"
Bronx rapper Nine's 1995 debut was this slept-on classic, "Nine Lives." From start to finish, this is a hugely entertaining, flawless hip hop album that reflects the surreal state of hip hop in 1995. Even though he was a pretty underground MC, guys like Nine could get some radio spins and generate significant underground buzz with major label backing back then. Nine is one of the most rugged MCs you'll ever come across. His delivery is a raspy growl, which he uses to bark, yell, and even sing like a reggae toaster, and his flow's always right on point. And even though he has such a menacing front, often talking about fighting, threatening, and violence, his music is fairly good-natured. He delivers clever punchlines, references, and bashes sucker MCs with a classic b-boy approach. Nine brings a lot of positive energy to a track, always delivers awesome hooks, and his presence creates a totally enjoyable product. The production on "Nine Lives," however, is immaculate. The beats here are some of the finest from the east coast in '95. You'll hear some creative uses of horn instrumentations, hard drum patterns straight from the gutter, fuzzy and uneasy piano cadences, and rough sampling. The music has a focused, consistent feel and emits some gorgeous vibes very frequently. The thing about this album is that each track individually is so good in its own right, there's so many here that could be truly classic singles. There's not even one song that I wouldn't call great, that's the level of consistency here. In contrast to the (great) cover, this album has a light and fun feel to it. "Nine Livez" was one of the best albums of '95, and today it's still slept-on like a bed. Beautiful production and a completely dope MC make "Nine Livez" a classic. "Nine Livez" opens to the sounds of an intro, which gives way to the great beat of "Ova Confident," where Nine bashes sucker MCs like a true great, using a KRS-One line for a hook. "Redrum" was this album's first classic single, a menacing and appealingly dark track where he displays his clever rhymewriting and energetic delivery. He uses a sing-song delivery on the frenetic "Da Fundamentalz." The most original and creative song is "Hit 'Em Like Dis," a collaboration with "Ribbit Froggy Frog" (I'm not sure if that's another MC or Nine with a different alias). Nine and "Frog" trade off clever punchlines over upbeat production, and Ribbit's verses are especially hilarious because he intersperses his words with frequent croaks and ribbits. "Who U Won Test?" is a nice track with simple piano-based production, followed by the highlight "Whutcha Want?", one of Nine's finest. This beat is amazing, immediately memorable, and the hook and raps are among the best. "Fo'eva Blunted" uses a droopy muted horn backing for Nine to profess his love to smoking, and musically "Peel" creates laidback vibes for Nine to tear up. You'll hear a harmonica and nice bass on the crazy collabo "Retaliate," another highlight. "Tha Cypha" is a strong, grimy track, followed by one of my favorites, "Ahh S...," which has a dark, ingeniously-constructed beat. Nine raps inspiredly, and delivers his best hook ever. The "Redrum" remix "Everybody Won Heaven" is at least as good as the original in my opinion. The best song on "Nine Livez," though, would be "Any Emcee," a song with a truly beautiful beat and hook made from a classic Rakim line ("Any MC that disagree with me, wave your arms..."). Nine spits his best verses over some incredible production, this is feel-good music and a classic track ("The last MC to disagree is now history / No longer an MC, he is now BC..."). The album closes with "Ta Rasss," which has a cleverly uneasy musical backing and another great performance. While Nine would only release one more album (1999's Cloud 9 ), he made his mark on the New York underground scene and established himself as a unique and clever MC not to be overlooked. "Nine Livez" is his masterpiece both musically and lyrically, and he gives a wonderful performance. Nine is clever, funny, and has more style than practically anybody; his debut is an artistic triumph. For those who can track it down (it's been out of print for a minute now), consider "Nine Livez" one to add to the collection, it's enormously enjoyable on so many levels and never gets old.

🎤🎤🎤🎤 The Source got it right
Still not into Any Emcee or Redrum. That Redrum remix was 🔥🔥🔥🔥tho. He definitely made up for the original. Very good job from the Bronx MC

Normally I'd balk at spending this kind of wonga on a cd, but this little-known gem is a serious 90s hip hop classic. Typically dark East-Coast beats paired with uniquely gravelly vocal delivery make for a combination that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Just buy it.
