It's made for specific applications that only a huge carabiner would do. For example, I bought it to attach to the top of a 10-ft platform step ladder to provide a convenient safety harness attachment point. This huge carabiner is the only one I could find on Amazon with a large enough opening and a throat deep enough for that application. The locking ring is spring-loaded.
