Offers answers and advice for those who have just been diagnosed with IBS. Like the other titles in the "First Year" series, The First Year-IBS offers two distinct advantages. First, it is written by a patient-expert, Heather Van Vorous, who has managed her IBS for more than fifteen years and knows firsthand what's required to manage her condition. Second, it guides readers through their first seven days following diagnosis, then the next three weeks of the first month, and finally the next eleven months of their first year. Starting with the day of diagnosis, Van Vorous provides detailed information about trigger foods, safe foods, soluble versus insoluble fiber, tips for eating and cooking, traveling, eating out, exercise, and much more. The First Year-IBS will inspire and educate those with IBS as no other guide does. Review: Good read - Great informative book about IBS. When I was first diagnosed, I was told to drink Metamucil. Metamucil?? That's the equivalent of telling a vampire to eat garlic. Heather takes it from the patient's perspective and works with physicians to explain what is going on and how you can best manage your IBS. I've used many of her tips and learned a lot about soluble and insoluble fibers which was invaluable. If you are newly diagnosed or know someone who is, this book will really help them understand what they are dealing with and how to best live with it. Though it's considered a benign condition, IBS completely disrupts your life when it's at it's worst and will hold you hostage in your home. This book helps you to manage it so you can be out in society and not panic so much about what might happen. I can't stress enough to get this book. It could also help some family members what is going on. This book actually has a section called "What to eat when you can't eat anything" - for someone without IBS that sounds stupid - for someone with IBS it can bring tears to your eyes because you can be there everyday. You are hungry, you don't feel good, all you want to do is eat something - anything - and not get diarrhea and stomach cramps. The list provided in this book is only the start of a fantastic new journey toward being able to eat. It's so fantastic. Almost like being able to walk again!! And, that is just the beginning. The book is very easy to understand, very sensitive to your situation (unlike any doctor you've seen, humm!) and it gives you knowledge that WILL make your days more normal - identifies the triggers (foods) that activate the ibs and helps you work around them. Forget the doctors and the tests and the medicines - this book is all you need (well, along with EATING FOR IBS). I've had it for four weeks and for four weeks I've been able to figure out what to eat at a restaurant and be able to get on the back of a motorcycle and go on a long trip without fear! Try that with ibs! Thank God for Heather and the fact she has found an answer and shared it with so many of us. If the book cost a thousand dollars, it would be worth it! Get it, read it, your life WILL change. You CANNOT eat like everyone else, this books shows you how to eat for you......This book is a real godsend for anyone suffering from IBS, in addition to Heather Van Vorous's other book, Eating for IBS, which has fantastic recipes. I had IBS-like symptoms for several years, and recently suffered a severe bout with it. While waiting to see a gastroenterologist I discovered Heather's book at my local library and decided to give the dietary guidelines outlined in the book a try. At this point, my condition was worsening and I had nothing to lose. Was I surprised to find that after only a few days of changing my eating habits by eating more soluble fiber I noticed a significant improvement. I felt considerably better, had more energy, and was able to freely go places I was afraid to go before. I felt like I was getting my life back. If you feel my review was helpful please hit yes. Thank you. Review: was very helpful in learning that it can also be caused by foods we eat that our gut cannot digest very easily. I did buy her so - After years of hearing that IBS is due to stress, was very helpful in learning that it can also be caused by foods we eat that our gut cannot digest very easily. I did buy her soluble fiber off of her website. I have noticed that if I use 1/2 tsp. before I eat something I haven't been able to eat in a long time (i.e., pizza), and if I don't it and just have a small amount, it doesn't cause the horrible gut pain that I used to experience the next day or even a few moments after eating it. While I'm not a fan of the ways she promotes how to relax (hypnosis, yoga, etc.), the rest of the book is very helpful and educational. I understand her website is very helpful also, but have not used it much. The one thing I've learned is that my gut can be very temperamental and one day I can eat an item with no problem but the next time it causes me distress. Have learned to take into account the various factors that are going on in my life before I choose to eat a food item (i.e., if I'm really stressed out or on pain medicine after surgery) I know I have to avoid those "iffy" foods that I can usually eat in small amounts when everything is calmer in my life. Definitely good book to have and helps to reassure us IBS sufferers that it's not just all in our heads!

One of the Best Books of It's Kind!
One of the best books I've read on IBS so far. Cons: As much I would like to eat the diet that helped Heather, it's too filled with carbs for me. Since I have the constipation form of IBS this diet actually made me more constipated. But I had to try it because being very thin I need the calories. At first I felt great, with more energy, then it hit me and I'm right back to where I was with nausea, bloating, fatigue, etcโฆ So now I need to go back on the light carbs and more raw/cooked foods, balanced just right for me. (Only trial and error will solve this. Doctors don't know our individual needs.) Pros: What I liked most about this book is that it is filled with other valuable information, things I didn't know about. Heather talks about stress and the subconscious mind playing a part in maybe why we have IBS. She also lists possible prescription and nonprescription methods of some relief for IBS, such as herbal teas, hypnosis, meditation, etc.. There is always going to be flaws in any book we read. Saying it's ok to eat wheat and gluten is one of those mistakes in this book. I can't eat wheat and I understand that most IBS sufferers can't either. Hopefully, every reader takes some of the suggestions with a grain of salt and does enough research, or talk to your doctor before attempting any new diet.

read this book if you have IBS!
highly recommend this book! This book saved me. If you have IBS, it is a must read. The only thing I did differently was that I also went gluten free. I feel normal if I follow the recommendations in this book. I have told a bunch of people to order it.

crucial for IBS people
I have suffered with IBS my entire life and I am retired now. Diagnosed in 1980. Found this book in 2005. Written by a woman from Seattle who suffered since childhood. She has done all the work by eliminating problem food, etc. So I bought the book and used all her info. She has a few recipes, too. It dramatically changed my life by directing me to the correct food and the elimination of the wrong food causing severe cramps and diarrhea. I know the causes such as...do not eat artificial sugars! Causes severe cramps and diarrhea just like Lactose Intolerance which I have.

Author is IBS 10% percentile with answers to all our questions and food triggers.
What a great IBS Bible!! Answers to all our questions and fears on what to eat and what triggers those horrible gas cramps that last for days. Learn what Soluable fiber to eat at what Insoluble fiber triggers to be careful with. After reading I have changed my life back to living without a Gall Bladder and what needs (has)to be done with one's diet to live normally again. No one delicious taste of certain food groups is worth those days of pain..this book will help you!!!

Not sure abt itโs OK to eat Gluten-and a lot of it๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ
Hummm...my IBS went away once I got off gluten and High fructose corn syrup! Yet recently had major life stress that is triggering IBS again. Thought this book could help. It may for some, lots even, yet not for me. She recommends โWhen youโre actually in the restuarant, order an extra basket of dinner rolls and eat several of them (choose the white bread ones, not whole wheat) to get a nice soluble fiber foundation to your mealโ If I did that IBS would be in all out assault within 20 mins! Ha/ugh! Again, maybe a great help for some, as one reviewer said we are all different with this IBS, yet I KNOW gluten and high fructose corn syrup are hands down triggers for me!
