What is the shelf life for these batteries?

While a reliable answer to this question should come from the supplier or the manufacturer I can assure you that I have two of these batteries in an operating rechargeable flashlight since 1983 and two others in another flashlight since 2014 (bought new from Amazon) and they are all functioning splendidly holding their charges fully for months on end and accepting full charges with no signs of weakening.

I want to use these in a waterproofed D battery holder - the kind with the springs. Has anyone done this? If so what was your method?

I haven't but with the spade terminals on top you could get connectors from like Radio Shack and remove the spring and contact plate from your battery holder and solder the new wires to them with the crimp connectors. Multiple battery's could be a room issue allowing for some space between batteries for the new terminals and something non conductive or electrical tape to insulate the terminals between batteries while connecting in series or what ever it needs. I think the bottoms are plastic so might not be an issue but good measure. Shouldn't be hard if there is space and later replacement would be an easy unplug and replace.
