The Story of Ruby Bridges [Coles, Robert, Ford, George] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The Story of Ruby Bridges Review: Teachable moment - a great way to share our nation's history - ALL of it - Great children's story about an important time in our nation's history and overcoming adversity. While the topic is heavy (segregation), the main character is a very young girl. If she could live through the horrors of being called names only due to the color of her skin and belittled as a first grader and still show kindness to those who tried to oppress her, I felt my 7 year old niece should be able to handle reading it. It is presented very well and in terms children can understand without being scared. It is also a great chance to have a teaching opportunity. We must teach our young people history lest it repeat itself! There is also a very well made and kid friendly movie about the topic that is available on desertcart. Review: Adorable and Reasonable Price :)! - Love this book. My Granddaughter learned about Ruby Bridges! Great Book :)!

BLACK HISTORY COMING ALIVE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN
I bought this book and shared it with those who I knew with young Black children. They all loved the book and so did their young children. This book was very helpful in terms of letting young African American youngsters begin to understand their history. It helped them to not only learn about racism - but also to understand that it is based on ignorance and requires that those who behave in racist ways be pitied and prayed for, but not hated. Everyone talked about the exceptional/superior illustrations in the book. The drawings were simply outstanding and made the story come alive. People commented on how well Ruby's hair, her legs and the other people were so well illustrated. This book was truly appreciated during Black History Month. Thanks!

Great book for kids
I loved this book as a kid, so I bought it for my baby, even though they're still a bit too young for it. This is an excellent true story that serves as a jumping off point for discussions about racism, bravery, empathy, and justice.

Lovely true story
Powerful true story of Ruby Bridges. She broke the color barrier as a small child and went on to become a civil rights activist. God bless her good heart.🙏

A watered-down intro to civil rights for younger children
I bought this book for my grandchildren, who are (thankfully) being raised in a diverse neighborhood, by parents who are determined they will learn tolerance and acceptance at home. My daughter had the book on their Christmas list. I don’t know if she’s read it to them yet, but I do know they are still too young to comprehend the magnitude of Ruby’s story. Had they been present that day, they would have seen Ruby as just another kid, what’s the problem? Even when they’re older, I think it will be hard for them to imagine a time and place when black Americans were denied ordinary civil rights, and a little black girl was escorted to public school by armed officers to protect her from waves of angry white people. I can hardly imagine it myself sometimes. (I was only 3 years younger than Ruby on that day.) One reviewer thought the book failed to address the prevailing venomous racist attitudes and behavior of the times. Maybe that was the author’s intent. The book does seem to distill Ruby’s story down to simple messages: it wasn’t fair, and it was against the law. And maybe that’s enough for younger children, but I believe that school children need to learn the whole truth, sooner rather than later. Other reviewers called this book out for too much religion. I didn’t care for it either, but you can leave it out or skim over it without changing the overall message. The author probably included it because his research showed it was truly important to Ruby’s family. And, as stated by another reviewer, it’s no secret that faith and churchgoing are important elements in black communities. Still, you can probably find another book about Ruby with less emphasis on Christian messages. Finally, the story left me wondering about the judge. I would like to know what reasoning prompted him to send 3 little girls together to one school, but send Ruby to another school by herself. Was it based on where they lived?

Used in class for the African Apartheid. Children loved it and a few watched the film as well
