Doom: Hell On Earth [Dafydd ab Hugh, Brad Linaweaver] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Doom: Hell On Earth Review: showed up 1 day early and in perfect brand new condition 5 stars recommend - Book showed up 1 day early and in perfect brand new condition. I already know I love these books as I have the 3rd one I read 10 years ago. Now I am going back to read the first 2. I bought book 1 used and it was old AF, but still good to read and in great condition for how old it was (yellow pages from age). Review: Perfect for me at least - I read the first book of this series a long time ago and have always wanted to get the rest. Then I finally broke down and spent my hard earned $4 to get it. I purchased the book new, but remember that the printing of these books were over 15 years ago, so mine had a little ware on the edges but there were no creases. The cover is not the flying sculls either, mine has the good old fashion cover of doom 2 on it, which I think looks better anyway. Now to the story, it seems they had the entire story worked out from the beginning. This means there are no strange events that don't match up and makes a solid read. If you are a fan of the game or like science fiction books, this one is a must read, but read Knee Deep in the Dead first. It made some of my childhood come to life.

Hell on Earth is a great sequel to a very addictive series.
Continuing where Knee-Deep in the Dead stops, we find our two favorite demon-slaying, zombie-‘sploding action heroes faced with the reality that Earth has been invaded. The story that unfolds on planet Earth is one that could never be guessed and packs a particular charm that I have never seen in a SciFi/Horror story. As our protagonists travel Salt Lake City—there are fascinating reasons as to why it has survived the apocalypse—with two new members, one a wayward Mormon, Albert, and the other a fourteen-year-old hacker, Jill. Make sure your seat beat is fastened for the highway madness, eerily crafted train ride, and worst of all, a demon control Los Angeles! Much of what I wrote in the review for Knee-Deep in the Dead can be applied to this novel as well. Yet, we are given much more character complexity as Arlene struggles with her atheism in a time when demons (or aliens) are reality. And Fly, he swears off love until the world is no longer at an end, but sometimes the heart gets in the way of the head. Hell on Earth is a great sequel to a very addictive series.

Great book
At the time of posting this review, I read this book about 10 months ago. But it's really good.

Small book, long story
Can't complain but I will voice that I wasn't expecting the book to be smaller than the first one and a different cover all together. Either way, I'm looking forward to continuing this story.

A serious step down saved by a good ending
I recently re-read "Doom: Knee Deep in the Dead," the first book in this series and loved it just as much as I loved it when I read it as a bright-eyed teenager. I'd never gotten around to reading the second book in the series, this book: "Hell on Earth," which is a very, VERY loose adaptation of the video-game "Doom II: Hell on Earth," so a few months ago, I bought all four books on Kindle and decided I was going to read them all, once and for all. So now I've made my way through "Hell on Earth," and I'm disappointed, yet still intrigued as to where the series is going as a whole. First of all, this book's main problem is that it keeps shifting first-person narratives. It goes from Fly's point of view, to Arlene's point of view, back Fly's point of view, then new characters are introduced and soon we start shifting into their points of view, too. In total there's four characters you have to get to know from a first-person perspective, which is asking a lot, at least I think it is. I understand the purpose behind this style, the book wouldn't make much sense if they didn't do it, but it's very jarring to shift perspectives in this way and it was detrimental to my enjoyment of this novel. Either way, the story as a whole wouldn't work if they didn't do this, so I don't know if it's bad writing on the author's part or if it's my fault for not being able to get used to shifting first-person perspectives. So I'm not really sure what's going on there but, no sir, I don't like it. Second, the story isn't very good. Sure, it introduces the new monsters from the video-game "Doom II" but doesn't bring a whole hell of a lot else to the table. I found the two new main characters, Albert and Jill to be kind of unlikable and didn't appreciate them as much as I think the author intended for me to. There's a lot of interesting stuff in here about the Mormons being survivalists, the day-to-day routines of zombies and cyberpunk hacking, but it's all bogged down by the book's middle part, which, as I recall takes place mostly on some sort of train heading towards Los Angeles. This part of the book is not at all well written and I had trouble understanding what was being described to me and then suddenly, without warning, the characters are no longer on the train and I'm not sure how that happened. Again, it might be my fault, my ADHD kicking in or something, but I think a lot of this book is either poorly written or it went way over my head, which is odd considering I'm a 31 year old man and this book is written with a "Young Adult" audience of 13 to 19 in mind. Anyway, I managed to choke through the book, and the ending is pretty good. I don't want to give too much away but the ending takes place at Disney Land-- that's not really a spoiler, it's just where the ending takes place and I enjoyed the end. In all honesty, I started reading this book about three months ago and had to put it down several extended periods of time between sittings because I just didn't like it very much, which is a shame because I really enjoyed the first one a lot. But if you're reading this review, you're wondering whether to buy it or not probably based on the fact that you read the first one because why else would you be on the Amazon page for book two of a series of four? And the answer is a "Yes?" with a question mark-- yes, you should read this book if you're really, REALLY curious about what happens to Fly and Arlene after "Knee Deep in the Dead," but only if you can handle the constantly shifting narrative and frankly, what I found to be unlikable new characters. That's just my two cents. Don't let me stop you from buying this book. Like I said, it's aimed at a much younger audience than my age group. There's hardly any swearing and the descriptions of violence are cartoonish at best (think of "Itchy and Scratchy" from "The Simpsons") and to top it all off it's based on a video-game that's been out for over twenty-five years, albeit very loosely. So that's my review, check it out but only if you're dead set on finding out what happens after the events of "Knee Deep in the Dead," which, if we're being honest, I wasn't for many years after reading the first book in the series for the first time.

Could be better
It is good, but not as violent and combat centric as the first book. There is a constant focus on the plot over action. There are a couple page errors but that's easily ignored. Too bad book 3 is 90 bucks.

I think this story explores many interesting things about a hell on earth scenario. Another deep dive into the Doom world.

Probably my favorite of the four books in this series. Obviously, if you've played the games, you'll understand it a bit better, but it's not based on the game as much as the first one. Great read.

I have enjoyed the Doom games since I was a kid playing them on my dad's old windows 95 laptop (floppy disc drive). Great book, though I have come across one page that was completely missing from one of the chapter's and a reprint of one of the pages (double sided). Other than those two flaws a good read (if you don't mind certain gruesome details).
