Enduring Same-Sex Love Long Before It Was Acceptable (or Legal)
Loved this book. This intimate portrait of Monty Glover and Ralph Hall paints a picture of a love affair that endured for a lifetime. Two men from different worlds, different layers of British society, found each other and found love. World War II separated them for years, but their correspondence back and forth gives us an intimate glimpse into their lives, their world, and their love. I am so very grateful that the author rescued these photos and letters for another generation to read about and see this exquisite relationship.

Insight into history
This is a fascinating book of old photographs taken by someone who was just an ordinary guy while he was alive, but now has become a part of history. We know so much about him, his life, and the times he lived in, because of his collections of photos. Every time I look at the photos I wonder who these people were, exactly what happened between Glover and them, and what became of them.

Charming Gay Romance
This is a charming pre and WWII gay romance between a gorgeous working class youth, Ralph Hall, and a middle class archtect, Monty Glover. Glover's photos and Hall's correspondence depict their deep love for each other over a half century together. A must read.

A wonderful find
I have no idea how I ended up with this book but it has proven to be a wonderful find. The story itself seems fairly unique in that it is one that is so well documented and of course photographed. Monty liked taking photos of males (in uniform or working class work attire) and Ralph obviously liked being photographed and it seems a match made in heaven. If Ralph were alive today I am sure he would have no problems being employed as a world class model as he had all the attributes - the stunning good looks, the patience and seems totally unselfconscious in the photos that are in the book. There are very few of Montague however but he himself was largely normal looking and unlikely to stand out in a crowd. It's a beautiful love story and the book is very readable. Buy it if you can.

a worthy addition to any gay man's collection
The price is a bit dear but worth it for those interested in pre war gay Britain. Gives insights into a very Edwardian gay couple and as a bonus lots of info about gay men in Britain and where and how they connected in the years before World War 2. I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend it.

Splendid!
This is the most marvellous book. I read through in one sitting, and ever since have picked it up frequently just to look at a particular photo or to read one of Ralph's love letters to Monty during the war, or to see Ralph in old age and know that he and Monty were still together after over fifty years. This is such a glorious collection of photos and letters that, through some miracle, escaped being consigned to the rubbish bin. A combination of important historical documents, a plain and simple love affair and a photographic record of gay men and their likes and loves at the beginning of the twentieth century.Highly recommended.
