Good,but not what i expected
Those of you expecting an in-depth analysis of Bowie's recorded output will be disappointed in this book. Some of the chapters(each named after a studio album in chronological order)barely scrape the surface.for example, the chapter on "heroes" never mentions robert fripp, the one on lodger doesnt mention adrian belew and most glaring of all,the chapter on hunky dory never mentions rick wakeman(its hard to imagine "life on mars" without his contribution). Also, there is almost no attempt to explain any of the lyrical content of the songs. What you do get is a coffee table book with lots of photos(actually, more photos than text). With a title of "album by album" i was expecting a little more detail. P.S. the Amazon description of this book is totally misleading. their claim that fans can "explore every track in detail" is just not true.all you get is a discography at the end .if you want a book that actually fits that description get "the complete david bowie" by nicholas pegg.

Enjoyed this
Thank you to Net Galley for the chance to read and review this book. This book is exactly what you would expect from the title. An album by album restrospective of David Bowie's musical career. I enjoyed this because it has extensive facts and information about all the albums. It mentions some things going on in his personal life, such as the birth of his children, but it is not a gossip book or just personal biography. Those aren't necessarily bad things to be interested in, but do belong in a different sort of book. There is also a lot of information about the other musicians and producers involved in making each album. Also included are many direct David Bowie quotes and plenty of beautiful photos. The book ends with a very in depth index of the albums with a wealth of information on each.Perfect for a lifetime fan like me, but would also be great for someone curious to learn more about David Bowie works.

Pretty good
Nice compendium of Bowie history for Bowie fans, but I found the quality of the photos to not be top notch , ie : some grainy , like photos that have been xeroxed and enlarged, or 3rd generation prints. But if you are a Bowie fan you won't mind.

All the photographic content is missing!!
Note this is a review specifically of the Kindle edition.I hate writing negative reviews but...I know that a black and white kindle is not the best way of viewing photographs but so much of this book depends on the images of the albums and Bowie himself that removing them makes the book seem half-baked.A Kindle is able to show images fairly well indeed there is an image of the cover shown in the book itself but for some reason the rest of the images have all been removed.Either offer the content in full or don't offer it at all!

Simply beautiful
This was clearly a labour of love. Paolo Hewitt's text is the fruit of a lifetime of careful, attentive listening to Bowie, but the real pleasure of this book is the graphic content. Extraordinarily, it unearths a trove of unusual, but brilliant, images from across Bowie's career, that avoid most of the obvious visual cliches while still being stunningly impactful in their own right. It's also impressive that the coverage goes right up to the present, with a good and thoughtful section on 'The Next Day'. All in all, I'd say this is probably an even better and more satisfying compendium than the V&A's (very good) 'David Bowie Is' catalogue.I can't imagine a David Bowie enthusiast not wanting to own this. I bought a copy as a birthday present for my wife, who likes Bowie as much as I like Dylan (i.e. a LOT), and she's been absolutely thrilled with it.

A superficial overview of Bowie
This reads like an expanded magazine article. It's a plotted history, rather than an analysis album by album. I was expecting a song by song critique and an over view of those involved in the making of the albums as well as some influences. This falls really far short of that. Very disappointing.IThe introduction is really banal, too. Bowie was varied and influential? No kidding.

I love it. The perfect obvious companion to Bowie's music. Definitely.
Paolo Hewitt's biogs are always spot on and this Bowie's discography ain't no different. Always knowledgeable and correct, a great music journalist writing about the very best Rock star This product is a delight to read while, probably, listening to his music and agreeing with the critic's review. Can't go wrong, can it?

Superb Bowie Book
The best book on Bowie that I've read so far.Chapters on every album and the photos are rare and well presented and paper and print quality is very high.A Must Buy for Rock/Pop fans and historians of modern culture not just David Bowie aficionados.
