Esbit CS585HA 3-Piece Lightweight Camping Cook Set for Use with Solid Fuel Tablets

I am a backpacker who likes to go as light as possible, and I think I may have found my new cooking setup with this little outfit. First of all, I saw this stove/cookset combination at REI, and thought it looked intriguing. Before buying it I thought that I should read some reviews. I read a number of reviews here on Amazon, and also watched some video reviews on YouTube. It seemed like there was a wide range of opinions, so I held off on buying it. Well, about a week ago I decided to give it a try, and ordered it through Amazon. Am I ever glad that I did! One of the main complaints on this product is that it takes a long time to get 2 cups of water to boil. That's true if you're comparing it to a canister stove, or something similar. If you don't mind waiting 15 minutes, or so, to get your water boiling, then this thing will do the job. As soon as I got it in the mail I put it to the test. Here's what I found: First test was in the house, with two cups of cold water, with fuel cube setting in the tray according to the directions. The two cups came to a rolling boil in just over 12 minutes. Second test was exactly the same, except with the fuel cube on its side. The two cups of water came to a rolling boil in 10 minutes. Third test was outside, with 30 degree temperatures, and 25 mph wind gusts. Again, I used two cups of cold water along with a windscreen of aluminum foil (I wrapped the windscreen all the way around). The two cups of water came to a rolling boil in 17 minutes. The last test was as close to field conditions as one could get, I believe. In the field, a person could also add twigs to keep the flame going longer (and hotter). The last test sealed the deal for me...I will now be taking this cookset on my next backpacking trip, and saving a lot of weight in the process. The key is to practice beforehand (especially with the windscreen--that is definitely the most important part), and plan accordingly for what this stove is capable, and not capable, of.

I am happy to recommend this. The fuel lasted ten minutes which was perfect to get a hard boil. I have left a message for the manufacturer questioning the removal of the thin layer of solid fuel backing left in the burner. Having a cup of coffee or soup in a power outage more than outweighs the cost. Love the storability of the solid fuel and the compactness of the cookset. Well thought out storage, even a lid which can be hung on the edge of the pot

I've been camping and hiking all my life and I have to say that this little solid fuel cooking system is awesome! I've used Esbit solid fuel tabs for awhile now and they're wonderful - I keep tabs in my 10 essentials kit. I got this little baby just for fun and to see what I could do with it and thus far I'm more than impressed. Super compact, well made, super light, and super easy to use. I got this model because of the built-in windscreen design (needed to maximize solid fuel efficiency) and the perfect 20oz size cup, which is just right for solo camping/hiking activities. Use it with a larger pot if needed like the GSI Soloist. As it is the kit allows me to store 12 14gram tabs (that's 120+ minutes of fuel) and a lighter all wrapped in a cute little mesh bag. Bottom line, while I still use liquid fuel systems, this kit can be used as your exclusive stove for many types of (multi-day) outings. That said, this kit and certainly the Esbit brand is probably one of the best solid fuel combos around for the $$. So if you're thinking about one just get it, we've all wasted more $$ on lesser things! ~ Last thought. Cold water takes more heat energy to warm, so if you're camping with this thing, take a 16oz container of water to bed with you and you'll be heat water from 70* instead of 40* in the AM and thus much more efficient- for any trail cook system.

I've used many other cooksets, and to be honest this is not my go to setup. I wanted something affordable, functional, and efficient that I could get for both my wife's and my son's camping bags, and this one was intriguing, so I bought one set to play with. It's a very well thought out design that fits together nicely. It's not ultralight, but it's not too heavy or bulky either, and your whole package fits inside the pot. The carry case is very convenient and helps keep everything together. I didn't want a larger cookpot for them - I carry that one. I just wanted them to be able to carry something that could boil water that they could cook with in a pinch if I am not there. The Esbit fuel is stable, and I can get enough in each one to last 4-5 days. BTW, removing your Esbit tabs from the foil and plastic packaging and putting them in a Ziploc not only reduces the stink but it also allows you to carry more in an environmentally friendly way. My tests with the cookset showed consistent water boiling in anywhere from 5-8 minutes, not too bad. Depending upon conditions, of course. I used a tin foil windshield over the front entrance as well, which also helps to reflect heat back inside the stove. The pot gets a bit sooty but nothing that's hard to clean (tip - carry a small sponge in your cookset). NOte also that you very well can feed twigs into the stove to extend the burn time or enhance the flame. That is a big bonus over other models IMHO. I ordered another one after testing it, and my wife and son will each have one with some Esbit tabs in their bags. This is not a top of the line ultralight setup, and it doesn't deserve 5 stars. It is, however, a well-designed and thoroughly functional and complete cookset for use with Esbit tabs, and it's fairly light and compact - good enough for 90% of users out there. I'd really give it 4.5 stars if I could. I use a Clikstand S2 and GSI Outdoors Microdualist setup, but I want my family to have their own options, too. The more options they have, the less they rely on me, and the easier my job is.

Great value, the esbit cubes work ok but often smell bad. I use wet fire cubes as fuel. The use of. The fuel is very good. The stove is sturdy and great at controlling flames from wet fires cubes or even sticks and twigs. Using wet fires you can boil water in about a minute and a half. It's very Fast at cookie g and boiling water. The size is great and can measure the amount of water inside the pot, by marks or intentions in the pot to measure the amount of water you put in it, especially if you're using the pot for rehydration of mountain house meals to rehydrate food. Great guy, especially for a hiking trip or for a hiking backpack as a bug-out bag food, and water boiler pot

I have used this stove both at home and while backpacking. I have also used the square, folding esbit stove. I much prefer this stove for the following reasons: It weighs 8 oz. including the one-pint cup and lid, it stores no less than five esbit fuel tabs plus a lighter, it is much more wind resistant, it is elevated on four little peg legs, and it is more stable. So, this stove stores more fuel, is less likely to damage whatever surface you are cooking on, and the spill risk is significantly less because the cup fits into the rim of the stove. I have had near-spills with the folding stove so I am not a fan of unsupported cooking surfaces. I suppose that you could also use this as a twig stove but that can be pretty sooty. The small size of the folding stove is not an advantage considering that you must still carry a cup or pot plus fuel. An advantage over alcohol or gas stoves is the bulk and weight of those fuels. The only disadvantage of the esbit system is the longer boil time.

This is a 5-star product for backpacking. It is tiny, light, and can carry all you need to make it work inside the pot (matches, Esbit fuel tabs). The durable pot is marked up to 16 ounces but filled to the top the capacity is closer to 20 ounces. This is great for use with Mountain House or other freeze dried food. Esbit fuel will take 16 ounces of water to a boil but as other reviewers have indicated it takes a while. If you use this product outside of backpacking, the limitations quickly become annoying and the good qualities won't mean as much. If you are car camping the small size and slow to boil nature of the product will be a bother and you would be better off with a larger stove using a different fuel. The bad smell of the fuel tablets is overblown in my opinion, I didn't mind it much. It's fuel, it's OK for it to smell like a fuel. *UPDATE - as other reviewers have suggested, I removed the extra tray in the stove that holds the fuel cubes. While this has undoubtedly voided any warranty that came with the product it also makes it possible to use alternative fuel sources if needed. I still plan on using the Esbit fuel cubes as I feel they are an excellent product but removing the tray provides extra space and flexibility.

Original review from 2017 -The Esbit camping cookset is a disappointment. I hoped that it could replace my alcohol stove, but it has yet to bring my water to a full boil using a single fuel tab. It gets 1 1/2 cups of cold water hot after a full 15 minute burn, but my alcohol stove and GSI Minimalist pot will bring that same amount of water to a full, rolling boil in 7 minutes. 2023 update - This system of stove and pot weight in at 7.4 oz, and the fuel tabs weigh 0.5 each. With a simple aluminum foil wind screen I am able to bring 1 1/2 cups of cold water, with an outdoor temperature of 50 degrees F, to a rolling boil in 8 minutes, using about 1/2 of a fuel tab.. This system is easier to use than an alcohol stove, and the fuel tabs cannot leak. The smell of the burning tabs is nasty, so keep upwind. If you are looking to boil up water for a hot drink, this system cannot be beat - as long as you use it with a simple foil wind screen. The stove fits inside the cup and it easily holds 4 fuel tabs (enough for 8 hot drinks) and a book of paper matches. This is now my go-to outfit for day and overnight hikes.
