Narrated by actress Cherry Jones! The eighth book in Laura Ingalls Wilder's treasured Little House series, and the recipient of a Newbery Honor. Fifteen-year-old Laura lives apart from her family for the first time, teaching school in a claim shanty twelve miles from home. She is very homesick, but she knows that her earnings can help pay for her sister Mary's tuition at the college for the blind. Only one thing gets her through the lonely weeks—every weekend, Almanzo Wilder arrives at the school to take Laura home for a visit. Friendship soon turns to love for Laura and Almanzo. The nine Little House books are inspired by Laura's own childhood and have been cherished by generations of readers as both a unique glimpse into America's frontier history and as heartwarming, unforgettable stories.

Nice Quality
I ended up buying the entire 9 hardcover book series and find they are the perfect size to make a nice display on my shelf. Print quality is nice, and the typeface is easy to read. I'm in my 40s and have loved the TV series since the 80s and find myself rewatching the episodes on Amazon Prime which has sparked my interest to finally sit down to read the books.

A Great Ending to the Series!
Although the "Little House" books do not appear to be quite as popular as they were a couple of decades ago, I shared all the books with my grandchildren in the form of audio books. We would listen to them as we drove on both long and short rides. They, and I, enjoyed the first three books(Little House in the Big Woods, Little House on the Prairie, On the Banks of Plum Creek) but then felt the next three were just fair to listen to. When I first started These Happy Golden Years, I heard a grumble or two from the g'kids, but as the story unfolded their listening delight picked up. Soon they were begging me to drive the longer way home so they could find out what happened next. These Happy Golden Years is a sweet love story full of interesting historical facts, plus enough action to keep my grandson interested. The only flaw we found with the audio version of the book is the singing of the actor (Cherry Jones) that did the reading. It was a bit grating at times when she pretended to sing as Pa. (Poor Ma if Pa really sang like that) Other than that it is a five star recommendation.

Lovely color edition
Book was new and exactly as described. My girl and I love the Laura Ingalls collection. This is the first time reading it and it does have a shocking event that is creepy and terrifying! Beware if reading it to the younger child. I really loved the book.

All grown up.
Who among the female readers young and old, didn't either dream of their wedding to come, or remember fondly their wedding past? It's a special time that most men will never understand. Almanzo did so well with his side of starting their life together. For that alone, all young boys or men should read this and the previous book in this series. For me though this may be the most special book in the series, having lost my father at a very young age. For just a moment, because of this book, I was able to really see him at my own wedding. Thank You Mrs. Ingalls-Wilder for that!

still in love with them
Book 8 and I still can’t get enough. I can’t wait to visit some of these places in person. I just can’t get over the kindnesses, the thoughtfulness. The efficiency. The lack of waste, the decency. It’s so beautiful. I just finished the 9 seasons of the TV program too and while it couldn’t possibly satisfy the books as well as the modern public - there were lovely nods to it and a respect for the books and the people.

This account of life on a claim in the South Dakota prairie in the mid 1880s was written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. In the book, she tells of her teenage years as she grew from a child to a young lady, and from teacher to wife. The reader learns much about the hard times and the good family life that carries them on.When she started teaching in the one room school, some of her pupils were older than her, so she has a struggle teaching and keeping discipline. As the school was several miles from her home, she had to live with the family of the school board and his bitter wife, who wanted to go back east. She is glad when Almanzo Wilder takes her home each weekend in the cold winter afternoons. After the two months teaching, she contributed the $40 she earned to her family to keep her blind sister, Mary, in college.Eventually, at the age of 18, she marries Almanzo Wilder, who is about 10 years older that her. This a good story of life on the Dakota prairies, the hardships, and the determination of the few settlers to survive on their claims. I would recommend this book to others.By James Hall, age 9.

These Happy Golden Years
These Happy Golden Years is the final (8th) book in Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House series. It won the Newbery Honor in 1944. These Happy Golden Years tells the story of Laura's first time away from her family, at age 15, teaching school in a claim shanty 12 miles from home. Boy, 12 miles was a world away in those horse and buggy days! In These Happy Golden Years Laura learns to manage a classroom and deal with unruly students, experiences severe homesickness, delights in vacation time at home and matures into a kind, caring, thoughtful young woman. This story wraps up the Little House series with the lovely, gently romantic transition of Laura and Almanzo's friendship into love, courtship and marriage. It's a treasure.

Passionnant

these happy golden years
Mi è piaciuto questo libro, come tutti gli altri 5 che ho letto di Laura Ingalls Wilder. Li trovo interessanti anche per grandi, non solo per bambini.
