An important book.
Amazingly, it was about 40 years ago when I read this. I'm shocked at how much I retained then I realized the author was great at conveying in a manner that sticks.

and I was not pleased at all at first
This book is incredible! I was told to read it for school over the summer, and I was not pleased at all at first. But when I finished the book, I read it again! This novel taught me how cruel the Nazis were and how the Jews reacted.

Good readable history, even for those of us NOT in school.
Very good overview of the whole Holocaust - including a glimpse of the two millenia of anti-Semitism beforehand which helped it to happen (I never knew). It includes a number of diary or journal entries which are fascinating, as well as a whole section about the Jewish resistance that I hadn't learned of before. Very good, even if one isn't at all a young adult!

The Holocaust
I had heard of the Holocaust growing up, but it wasn't until the latter 1970's that I developed a real interest in it. The first book I ever read on the subject was this one and to this day is the standard I hold other books on the subject to. It's heartbreaking, but a page turner at the same time. This is hard to putdown and once finished, hard to forget. Highly recommended!!

YOU Will Never Forget
This is a true story of hate and ignorance, prejudice and misery that cost many millions of lives. Within a period of seven years six million Jews were starved to death, shot or gassed. It is a fearful and inhuman story--mostly heart-breaking, but with inspiring accounts, too, from the survivors and of the dead, of bravery and resistance. You'll never forget the Jews of the holocaust. (Suitable for junior high and up.) The Creative Teacher: Activities for Language Arts (Grades 4 through 8 and Up)

wonderful, accesible history for young adults!
Meltzer writes the story of the Holocaust from an interesting viewpoint. Becuse he is a young 15 year old American Jew, watching the events of the war from afar, he brings a passion to the delivery of the historical information that makes it more engaging and powerful. The organization of the book into chapters according to chronology makes it easy to read as a whole, or a reader can use it to research a particular aspect of the Holocaust. As a teacher of middle schoolers, books that are so accessible and interesting are hard to find. I would recommend any reader interested in the subject to start here- you won't find much better!
