Encyclopedia of Horse Breeds

Wow!
Another book that will take time to go through, but my initial thoughts are mentioned below.About 400 breeds from around the world makes for an absolutely fascinating read. The author manages to pack a small section in a small amount of space, and most have pictures, though sadly, they're black and white. Understandable, given the amount of info, but color photos would have been fun just the same. There is a small section partway though with color photos, however, but it leaves one craving more.Towards the back of the book there is a couple of pages (appendix) on horses by country, which is rather interesting, and creates a quick at-a-glance read. There's also an appendix of horses not mentioned.

Essential
It is by far the most detailed and comprehensive book on horse breeds I have ever come across. I was particularly impressed by the depth of the coverage of breeds from the former Soviet Union (some of which I have never seen referred to, let alone described in detail, in books which are not from former Soviet Union countries). I was a little surprised that some American breeds were not mentioned (e.g. the Racking Horse and other, perhaps newer, breeds such as the Nez Perce or the Montana Travler), but considering how many resources there are out there pertaining solely to American breeds, it is not too much of a loss. Perhaps in the next edition?

Faithful Reporting
Being the author of this book I am naturally biased toward it. What I can say is that I contacted the best authorities in the world for information and pictures and did not borrow from any other book. One thing I would like to say about the reviews on this book. The book is exactly as described by Amazon and the University of Oklahoma Press and I want to debunk the few odd reviews stating that this book consists of ten yellowed pages. I have no idea why anyone would state such a thing but can assure you that it is untrue and completely ridiculous. Thanks,Bonnie Hendricks

The book itself look good and my daughter loved it
I bought this book for my daughter's Bday. I thought the pictures in the book were supposed to be in colored, but it was black and white. The book itself look good and my daughter loved it.

I really like
I ordered this book I love how its very informative and has breeds of horses that were originated in Greece. It is very hard to find stuff about Horses that originated in Greece. But I wish more of the pictures had color that way you can really distinct the difference if you are ever up close to horses.

Its a classic and still up to date for the breeds still in existence.
One of my favorite horse books.I gave this one as a gift for a friend.I also have a copy.one of the best international horse breed books written in a long time.

Excellent Information - Outdated format
This book is truly a complete guide to horse breeds. Unfortunately the quality of the book material was a disappointment. It was filled with photos; but only a few were color photos. The pages were not much better than the quality of a comic book, thin and yellow. I expected much more for the price. 4 stars solely on the detail and depth of it's information.

Great Addition to Any Library
Lots of detailed information on all of the breeds covered. My only complaint is that every entry does not have a photo with it. With the breeds I have never heard of before, a photo would have been helpful.

Not overly impressed
Although the book is very informative, the pictures are in black and white, not colour. Very detailed information, but almost more than the average person would be looking for.I doubt that I'll use it very much.
