Walter Edgar is a great story teller and he bring the last century in South Carolina history to life. This book helps to fill in the details of why my parents, grandparents and great grandparents lived the lifes they did.Many were oppressed, not only blacks but whites as well. It has taken South Carolina almost 100 years to overcome the effects of the Civil War.

Wonderful primer for new Carolinians. Great insight into current SC social, political and economic structures. My last 20 years, and those years remaining will be here in this wonderful state. This book gave me numerous strings to pull for additional reading to learn more intimate, focused historical elements.
