Style over substance
This visually striking book promises rather more than it delivers. Internally, the design can get in the way of the substance, with the highlighted picture references particularly distracting. But the real problems lie with the text, which is the work of a number of contributors. The book should have been written by one person or well edited. Instead, we have repetitive individual chapters that often cover some of the same ground, and which fail to be integrated into a coherent whole. Most damningly, the book gives no real sense of Gray as a working artist, designer and architect - we see the product, but lack understanding of the day-to-day creativity. Three stars for the illustrations.
