2.5 x 3.14 cannot hold a regular bor of soap. To hold a normal bar you need about a 3 x 5 x 1.5 inch box. How can this hold a normal bar of soap?

You are correct, it cannot. The box I have measures 2.5 x 3 7/8".

How well do they hold up? I want to use them in my classroom to store crayons.

I think they will hold up for at least a year. The two problem areas would be the front piece that snaps over a little peg. I find it a little difficult to open. On the back are plastic hinges that hold the top on--they are not very thick. I bought them to send in Samaritan's Purse Shoeboxes and I think they are fine for that.

Is the top diamond shaped?

No the top is a rectangular shape just like the box. They were some what hard to open but I’m sure that will loosen after time.

I received opaque light yellow boxes, not translucent as described. Any explanation?
