A bright and beautiful classic about the simple pleasures of gardening from bestselling and beloved Caldecott Honoree Lois Ehlert. Calling all budding gardeners! What would you like to grow today? Is it green beans, or peas? Corn or carrots? There's so much to learn in Lois Ehlert's colorful picture book about growing vegetables. First we collect the necessary tools, and don't forget the seeds. Then the magic happens: planting, weeding, harvesting, washing, chopping, cooking, and best of allโeating! There's even a recipe for vegetable soup! Ehlertโs simple cut-paper-style illustrations are perfect for even the tiniest growers. A wonderful introduction to gardening from a master storyteller. Review: Durability for Toddlers and Vivid colors for Infants - Wonderful book for the early budding backyard farmer. Vivid colors of vegetables will keep any toddler/youn read captivated as they learn the names of vegetables and see the process for growing food that can be cooked with. Review: Yay veggies - I like the veggie positivity that encompasses this book. Yes, itโs about growing and harvesting veggies to make soup but the pictures and text are fairly simple and make the idea of eating vegetables into an adventure. This author is great and we have several of her books, all of which make us want to get out and garden. This one makes my kids request veggies at meals- thank you!

Great Book
Kids love this story. The colors are bold, and the story allows for basic vocabulary building related to gardening. The story reads really nicely, and leads children to the understanding that their food comes from a garden, and that a garden can produce vegetables to use in soup. It talks about how the vegetables are noted, how they grow, a SN how they are prepared and cooked together for a meal. I accidentally ordered the paperback instead of the board book, so pay attention to the fact that there is a choice. I am sure that it is obvious, but I missed it. I was ordering it for a gift, so I was sad at myself for the mistake, but the book is one of our favorites.

A wonderful book for preschoolers
I use this book in a class I teach for early childhood educators. It is a pretty perfect book. The language is simple and elegant. The illustrations are beautiful and informative and they complement the text. It teaches several valuable concepts at a level that preschoolers can "get." I watched a family child care provider with a mixed-age group of 2- to 4-year olds use this book and simple props to involve all the children in acting out: preparing the soil, planting seeds, watering them, harvesting the veggies, and then making mock soup in a real pot with plastic vegetables. This could be combined with each child bringing one veggie from home and making real soup, perhaps also reading the book "Stone Soup." Each wonderful new picture book is a gift, now more than ever as we understand early literacy. Thank you for "Making Vegetable Soup."

Mmmm noodle soup. No no, VEGETABLE soup.
I love when recipe books have pictures. Has seriously helped me figure out this whole cooking thing and you know, gardening. But really, my 5yr old loves this book. Mostly because of the garden outside and he can go and get the veggies needed to make soup. Will he actually eat the soup? No, because veggies are "icky" and he prefers meats and cheeses. So I have to get them into his body some other way.....maybe pasta sauce. Anyways, wonderful book. Arrived on time for bedtime reading and is a well made piece of work.

Perfect also for teachers
We're using it at pre-school. Well done and beautiful drawings. Clear exposition and excellent pedagogical tool for didactics to three years old kids.

A bit less than I expected as I'd read rave reviews.
Rather young for my four year olds but great picture book and will be fairly useful when discussing food issues
