Yes, you can cook with whatever you want - charcoal briquets, charcoal lump, wood chunks. You can even put small logs in it if you want. Or use any combination. For long cooks, the briquets last longest though, they burn slower. You can also get an oversized aftermarket charcoal basket which will cook all night and all day if you want.

Q: Can you use lump charcoal in this smoker? All I have seen is people using briquettes.
