Japanese brand but made in China
I was initially disappointed to see that the tool was made in China, as I specifically ordered this particular item because the brand is Japanese. Considered returning it, but as there wasn't really an actual Japanese alternative, and I needed it for a project, I decided to just go ahead and use it.While I'm disappointed it's made in China, I'm happy with the tool. It appears to be of high quality, and the aesthetics are interesting, considering it's a pretty basic tool. Very accurate, solid construction with a good weight to it, and for less than $20 I'd say its a decent value. Works well for what I need to do, and would recommend it to others as long as they understand it's not made in Japan.

It's actually stainless steel
The description states that it's aluminum but it's actually stainless steel, very well made and nicely finished, just the thing for fine finish and cabinet work. It might be too small for timber framing or work at that scale.

Edges are not straight
I bought this a while ago and noticed that my 90-degree angles were sometimes off, so I stopped using it. I found it recently while reorganizing my tools and decided to test it against some known straight edges and a high-quality combination square that I know for sure is square and straight. The 90-degree edge of this square is not straight. There is a high spot in the middle of that edge, so lines that I draw with it end up slightly curved. As a result, when marking on a narrow board, the scribe line might end at the high spot on the edge, making the line out of square. When marking wider boards, the line ends up square on both ends but curved in the middle. The 45-degree edge has the opposite problem -- it has a slight hollow in it.The edge with the fence is the only edge that is perfectly straight.I supposed I could try to fix these problems with a file, but they shouldn't happen in the first place. If you buy one of these, I would recommend testing it for squareness and straightness. But honestly I would not recommend this at all -- a 6-inch combination square can do anything this can do, is a similar size, and you can buy one from a brand that has better quality control.

Pretty much perfect
Yes, it's made in China. Yes, the older ones (like the one JSK Koubou uses in his Youtube videos) were made in Japan...but the one I got was a perfect 45 and (almost) perfect 90. I actually have a genuine made-in-japan 135 degree Shinwa - that is 20+ years old and it's not quite as perfect as this version is. Maybe I'm lucky, but I am definitely satisfied!!
