Does it cover (lighten) dark roots in between highlights or is for covering only gray hair?

I haven't tried it for that purpose. I use it to cover gray in between hair coloring sessions. Works great on part & crown.

Does this also cover bald spots?

it covers a broad part and small areas without hair, i imagine it would therefore cover a wider area. hold the can close to area to be covered and point it at the spot

Too messy and color dump.

I tried this product b/c it was cheaper than the amazing dpHue grey hair cover up. What a mistake. First, know that the dark brown/black color is a flat black color. I received a refund b/c this was un-usable for me. It sprays out so much color that it runs and sprays your face. So, getting the hair around your face was a nightmare. I've never had to clean up so much with other products I've tried. It would plaster my scalp, which you could see through my hairline hairs and It was so obvious and unnatural looking...It was embarrassing. The worst part was that it comes off during the day. If you brush your hair accidentally or touch/scratch your heard/hair, the color comes off on your fingers and a lot of it is on your fingers! Then, I'd find black splotches on my forehead during the day as well or the forehead hairline was bleeding color. Embarrassing. I do not recommend this product. dpHue is the absolute best. It doesn't spray your face, it goes on lightly and does not rub off on your fingers, I'm returning to dpHue and sticking with it! But this product is an absolute NO.
