Great waterer when used as intended
Second UPDATE: Almost 6 months later, still no issues with this waterer. No leaks, no rust. UPDATE: One month after: No rust or leaks. Still working great! Perfect, works as it's supposed to when used correctly. I usually purchase these from our local farm store but thanks to covid, nothing is in stock and my 10 yr old waterer rusted through last week when it was 90+ degrees. Amazon to the rescue! If you've never used this style of waterer, here's some advice from someone who uses them exclusively with flocks of over 70 birds: it MUST BE LEVEL. You cannot put these on an incline, they will leak. On this particular one, there is a rubber gasket inside on the little lever that stops water from leaking out while you fill it... you may need to push this gasket a little farther onto the lever. That will fix most issues with it spilling while filling. DO NOT PICK UP using the handle on the cover. It's not made for that. DO NOT try to hang this waterer... it's not made for that either. DO NOT put vinegar in this waterer... it's galvanized, vinegar will corrode the coating and cause it to rust fast. Honestly, I see no difference in this waterer versus the same exact one I've purchased 2 times over the years at local retailers. Same thickness and quality. I'd buy again if needed and I couldn't find locally. Thanks Amazon!

Cheap design / doesn't work
This was worthless since the first day but I didn't have a choice. I almost never write negative reviews but 2x per week when I go water the chickens I am reminded that I should start. I bought this product because the previous one got too rusty. The lid on this one was so cheaply made that I had to use the lid from the old one. It almost fits but it's really annoying to work with AND the old one is rusty. This one has a handle that is barely attached. With 5 gal. of water and a unit that requires pressure, the handle must work, or you can't take it off the base. I still have the lid but it is unusable. I tried reinforcing it with some aluminum-friendly hardware but there's just enough handle to work with. Sorry

Less waste than an open bowl.
I have both the 2 gal and the 5 gal waterers. The 2 gal is for my 4 Silkies; and the 5 gal is for my 6 Sex Links. Have had the Silkies for years, but had to separate them when the Sex Links arrived. I've used this type of waterer for many years for different flocks. The trough part is narrow and shallow and thwarts any hint of the chickens jumping into it or perching on it. I've never had any problem with the gravity feed function. I do make sure that the rubber gasket on the inside of the base stays clean. I knocked a star off because it isn't the easiest kind to clean. It's in 2 parts, and in order to clean both parts properly you have to pull up on the handle and twist to remove the "cover" that goes over the base. I use a hose and paper towels or rags. It's not difficult, just awkward. In the winter I have each one on a heated base; and I only put 2 gals in the 5 gal one. If you fill it completely the heater will not heat that much water. I have used all kinds of waterers: nipple, vacuum, open bowl, and this is my favorite. I have very hard well water and didn't realize that the mineral build up on the nipple kind (the nipples are metal) would eventually stop the water flow. The vacuum kind was hit or miss in finding the "sweet spot". And we all know how awful an open bowl is. The only other issue is my Sex Links can jump/fly on to the top. And of course they poop. Don't have that issue with the Silkies. They can't fly!

Excellent, but not without issues
We've had ours for nearly two year now and it's basically worked flawlessly for us during that time. However, it's not without issues... 1) When we first received the unit it wouldn't hold water as there was a leak in the seal. I fixed this with a small amount of silicon caulking and haven't had a problem since. 2) Chickens like to sit on it and as a result they poop into the water (they still drink it though!). This can be solved with a shelf above it or some kind of cap to deter the chickens 3) Ours is now rusting. There are no signs of weakness or holes, but the water is now discolored and it's time to buy a new one (or paint the old one)

It lasts if you take care of it
I've had this waterer for over 2 years now and it's holding up. It just recently had the plunger come loose a little bit for water being let into the tray but it stops leaking when the cover goes on. I scrub it weekly with a wire brush to keep it clean, takes 5 minutes. I was looking to possibly get a replacement just in case as nothing lasts forever, but I'm shocked at all of the negative reviews. Either these people are overly rough with it or are incapable of maintaining it, I don't know. I've had great luck with mine and gladly recommend it.

It’s ok
Works ok. Handle on top broke off first week due to bed spot weld. I didn’t use it to carry the container per manufacture instructions. It broke off while turning the handle to open the waterer. The spring that’s purpose is to keep water from leaking while carrying the waterer is leaking and it’s losing quart of water in 5 minutes. Other than that chickens love it. It is good size and perfect for winter if you’re using heater. I would still recommend the product. I also have the 2 gallon one for the inside of the coop and it has no problems.

Really a good unit.
Ten chickens use this waterer....and it goes thru water in 4 days. This is the best waterer I have had so far. I have a 15 inch heater plate under it. It gets cold here in Alaska.......this is the perfect one !!! Mike

Rusted quickly.
This rusted quite quickly so I had to use a steal brush every week to clean the rust.

Merci.

The best!!
I bought both the feeder and the waterer. The lid is a life saver as it keeps the chickens from dirtying the feed, as for the waterer, it’s doubled walled so I can use a heater/de-icer during winter months, 5 gallon is the perfect size for 8 chickens. I would buy more but they are out of stock - I guess word has gotten out!! Buy them when you can.

Exactly as described.
This is a great waterer. I used the metal water heater platform with it as well for the winter. My only problem is it's not big enough for the number of birds I have but that is a me problem and not an issue with the product. I will buy a bigger one if offered.
