D'Addario Folk Nylon Classical Strings EJ34, Ball End, Black

Easy to restring a 30+ year old guitar we had! Quality strings for a great price! Note clarity is easy to hear. It took a day or two for the strings to settle and hold tune, but since then they’ve been easy to keep in tune! Tone is more mellow than bright, but fits the “folk” style.

I was looking for the more mute sound of nylon strings, but didn't feel like shelling out money for a classical guitar. I found these strings and have been using them for about 2-3 months now (time has lost meaning this year). I was skeptical that these would sound decent based on some of the reviews here, but I've been pleasantly surprised so far. I installed these in my Ovation Applause guitar, replacing the Elixer steel strings. While the Ovation bridge probably would have allowed me to get away with regular wrap nylon strings, I went the ball bearing route since I didn't know if the wrap around nylon strings would introduce too much foreign stress on the bridge. Installing the strings was easy, but I recommend leaving less excess string than you normally would while threading the tuners, or you'll end up with alot of string wound around the tuners like me (ignore the toddler finger smudges in the pics). Once strung, I adjusted the truss rod to relieve tension (made about 4-5 full left rotations) to try and minimize any potential fret buzz, and reduce the chance of string snapping. The strings took about a week to really settle and not drop flat a full note every 10 minutes, but once settled and tuned, they sounded fantastic. Since the neck is slimmer than a classical guitar, and nylon G,B,E strings are thicker than it's steel counterparts, I initially found my fingers a bit crammed, and rolled off the strings many a times. After a bit of practice to adjust, I found these strings have a great mellow sound that I've been chasing after, and perform really well for $15 strings. If you are looking for a nylon sound, but don't want to spend ~$150 for a cheap classical guitar, these strings are a solid choice.

I'm no expert on guitar strings. I had some really cheap ones on my mini "student" guitar, and they were pretty bad with the low note constantly being out of tune when you strummed it, even right after careful tuning. My guitar sounds SO MUCH BETTER after putting on these strings, and inspired me to practice more. The bottom metal strings are such a pretty luxurious gold color also. The top ones are clear plastic. All strings have balls at the end so it made for easier installation. They come in a package with a little code on it where you can check online on the D'Adderio's website to check its authenticity. Me not being picky, did not do that. So far as staying in tune, they all didn't stay in tune very well at first between sessions. This is true for all strings before they stretch out though. After time though, they seem to be staying in tune pretty well even between sessions. And I want to mention that they DID stay in tune, even when they were brand new, through a short session of playing. Which is more than I can say for my old strings. So far as the sound, they sound really nice to me. Again I'm no expert but I'd say it brings a warm mellow folky sound. When you strum these strings with your finger pads, they sound so soothing and nice, despite not being able to play that well :). There is a deep rich woody sound that comes out with these strings, which makes my cheap guitar sound rich and full of soul. Anyway, overall these strings are totally awesome, and were a nice upgrade for me.

No one string is best for all guitars or players. We all know that right? Ok, so I wanted to try these out as they sounded like they would be right for me. I have an old late 70s Hondo guitar. Great little classical guitar designed for beginners (which is me). These strings suit it quite well and are excellent quality. I love the gauge of the strings. The diameters are larger than the strings they replaced (Ernie Balls) and I think the bass strings are perfect for a classical acoustic guitar. I actually prefer the thinner trebles to these, but in ratio to each other the set feels good. The strings are very light tension though. That is good if you want something softer on the fingers, but I actually think it is harder to hold because of the thickness of the string vs the tension they are under. It probably isn't anything good or bad, just me needing to get used to it more. Speaking of light tension though, be careful stringing your guitar. I broke my E string by being stupid and tightening it too much. Then a day later the e string snapped. I chock that up to my error, and not a reflection of the string quality, but I was having a hard time tuning it right. Tuning of these has been a bit of a pain. It was very hard for me to get the initial tune. Then once I did, the strings need to be constantly re-tuned. This is normal, but I think it feels a bit excessive for these. Specifically the e and G strings have been pesky. The first string has been double the joy since it snapped and I replaced it (so started the break in process all over again). My G string could be my guitar. While nothing is wrong with my guitar, the G has always been a little finicky. I think that is just amplified with these particular strings. My only other critique of the strings themselves would be they are noisy. Since the bass strings are nice and thick, and also uncoated, they scream out as you slide your fingers across them. I don't actually mind that too much for my play style and skill level, but I know a lot of people hate that. Other than that I think these have a terrific sound. The sound is distinctly different than most strings I have heard. It seems cleaner, but not sharper. They ring out very loudly, which is great for my play style (finger picking/strumming). Strumming with a pick is ridiculously loud. Mind you, I don't have a large body guitar so the acoustics are not amplified very much on a normal basis. But with these strings it really helps the sound amplify and carry. These string are not right for everybody. I'm sure there are those guitars that the strings just don't sound right on, but I really think they have a good feel and sound for a classical guitar so they are definitely worth a try. I love them and am not sorry I bought them.

I've been playing for over 30 years and recommend these for any beginner on acoustic guitar. I have a couple of guitars and keep one strung with these type nylon strings. They are softer on the finger tips and provide a warm sound. great for practice, but may not be the best for performance - just depending on how you are picking up the sound.

I've been using these strings for several years, now. Last time I changed strings, I tried some different trebles... rectified nylon. I liked the feel under my fingers, but I never quite accepted the sound. Yesterday I realized that was the reason I hadn't been playing as much, so today I switched out the trebles. I've come back to these black nylon folk strings and the sound is music to my ears... Pun intended. These strings have a richer, fuller sound. A beautiful sound! Nothing against the other strings... I'm sure there are many who love them. They just weren't my sound. I plan to have an extra set of these EJ34s around, now, so I'm never without them. I identify as a folk singer, playing folk guitar, but I love many songs from other genres. You'd be surprised how good a rock, or heavy metal song can sound when played and sang in folk style. These strings lend themselves well to this. I think I won't be trying other strings for a while... a long while! If you find something that works, that gives you the tone/sound you want, why change it?!?

Just like few others reported, the high E string popped all by itself while guitar was hanging by itself in a climate controlled sound studio. Same exact thing happened again on second set. First one was silver plated version second was 80/20 bronze version but the nylon strings are probably identical. Both times strings broke near soundhole after about 3-4 weeks of light to moderate use on Yamaha NTX1. Can't imagine what if any misuse took place, simply playing mostly fingerpicking and if they break while guitar is not used... That's not a good sign to me. Otherwise the tone and ease of use rest ringing a guitar is great just had to do it twice several weeks apart, so thank god for ball ends. So if you don't mind having to change strings often these are good sounding strings. I would still buy them if their tone suits your music.

I had forgotten how much I liked these strings, I 1st tried them on an acoustic guitar several years ago; I was looking for a softer feel and sound. In my search for an electro-classical guitar with a more narrow nut width than the 52 mm, this is 48 mm, I decided to try this budget priced [$155 + shipping + taxes = $275 Cdn] Harley Benton 850. Notice on the saddle/bridge... I did a wrap around to give a little more sustain, also see that I replaced the traditional classical flat edged saddle with a 12" radius bone acoustic saddle which brought the action down on the 1st and 6th strings... and rounded the strings up the neck a little... very nice but it takes the intonation out at the 12th fret, but no big deal for my use, I do not intend to play classical style on this guitar, only blues and cowboy chords. Plugged in sounds great through my Fender Junior On-The-Go Acoustic amp. I also run it through my Spark Amp to the Fender for a variety of sounds, unlimited choices. The appearance of the black and silver strings on this black body guitar is also a plus, I did replace the tuners with antique black and brass from Musiclily here on Amazon, better looks and tuning ratio. This is my 3rd string change in 3 days and I prefer these so far to the other more traditional classical strings. I may switch the saddle back to a real bone classical, but I will have to take the time to trim it down quite a bit to get the low action height I want and also a bone nut with only a 46 mm width that should fit and bring the strings a little closer together for ease of play. Over all I have decided to keep this guitar and I will update this review as my modifications continue.
