I am a beginning - intermediate learner and this book is just right for me. The chapter on tones provides good examples to practice tone pairs. I recommend practicing them with one of the many online voice recognition systems if, like me, you don't have a native speaker to practice with. Ch. 2 Basic Grammar is my favorite chapter since it covers many of the essential grammar constructs with real examples. Other chapters include Counting, Polite Speaking, Greeting and Intro, and Daily Life/Social Activity ... with an emphasis on practical examples. This book helps pull things I've covered in the past together for me and provides a good opportunity for practice via the myriad examples.

It is a very much an academic book (almost like a university thesis), so it is suitable for those who like reading. Although it touches on the basic topics for beginners, some contents are pretty advanced. I have the electronic Pdf version, so it is less interesting as it seems wordy. It would be a great book with better layout and graphical presentation. I enjoy the grammar part. Thanks!
