Windows 8 for Seniors for Dummies

Just Not Enough
I just bought a new computer that was preinstalled with Windows 8. I was coming from an old Gateway that had Windows XP on it. So, yes, I had a dinosaur and I was happy to see it go. I was still a little untrusting, however, that I would be able to learn Windows 8 because I was so far behind. So, I needed the best book for someone who really is a dummie! Everyone I talked to told me that this was the book to get. Well, I can't say that others don't find it sufficient to meet their needs, but it certainly didn't fit mine. I went carefully through it chapter by chapter doing everything I was told to do, but at the end of all that, I felt clueless. I couldn't do what I needed to do, and by its title, this book sounded like it was perfect. I found it to be too simple. I discovered that after 10 or more years coddling along my old computer, I had learned new things. And, I needed more than this book offered to be able to do what I had always done on Windows XP. So, I decided to look for another book, and I found what I needed in a book with the title of MY WINDOWS 8. It was not written by Micrcosoft, and I know now that being taught by an outsider offered me the kind of teaching and lessons that I wanted. I now feel so comfortable "whizzing around" on Windows 8 that I truly am proud of myself! That doesn't happen often.

purchased as a gift for my "senior" sister
Not only is it book for dummies but it's a book for senior dummies (no offense seniors, i'm a senior too) but give me a break - how simple do the instructions have to be? I kind of feel like people think because we're seniors that we're stupid - we are not stupid. BUT some of us are too wet behind the ears to figure things out and we have stopped using our brains. I understand however because the lingo that is used is often not the lingo that we are used to so it IS good to have a book that explains it so that anyone can understand. Once you get thru the basics however you can graduate up to something more in depth. You just have to believe in yourself! Don't forget your generation saved the world from Tyranny and sent a man to the moon, so I'm pretty sure you can figure out how to use a computer!!! AND this is a good place to start. Good luck!

for the little old lady who wants to learn
This book is for little old ladies and gentlemen (or not so old) who want to get stuff done, but don't really care about the details of how the magic happens. They have never been computer geeks and never will be, but they want to be able to email and surf and such using the Windows 8 that some kind relative generously thrust upon them. This book tells you how. An example: we succeeded in taking Norton off the unit that Toshiba had put on. But we were then having trouble restarting the original Defender. After searching for hints on-line in chat rooms and help sites for an hour with no good results, we remembered to check the book - there were the directions, very clear and easy to follow. Within minutes it was done. Our ages are 60 to 85 and we all found that this book paid for itself several times over in saved frustration. We now know what a "tile" is and how to rename some of them, rearrange them, buy "apps" and even install and use them. It's a god-send.

Maybe another star would be fair
I bought this for my mom when she got her new touch screen, Windows 8 computer. She is 83 years old. Mom keeps up with stuff, but she has always asked questions about her computers in the past when I've called her on the phone or when I visit. She got the computer in November and it's now March - and I haven't had one question!!That's why I can recommend this book. It might even deserve one more start; but since I haven't used the book myself I don't know. I figure when someone can read a book about something that has had as many negative comments as Windows 8 - and not ask any questions..... It must be a very helpful book.

My Dad loves it!
Bought this for my 75yr old dad because he bought a new laptop with W8. While he did really good with WXP and W7, W8 was knocking him for a loop. I live 1000 miles and another timezone away and I only use Macs. Every time he would call for help, I would have to Google up an answer, so the book was my last hope for ending the 6am calls for "how do I get to my email again?"Turns out it was the best idea I've had _ever_. He's well on his way to learning the new OS and the calls have trickled down to only occasional. BTW, Don't let the word "Dummies" in the title fool you - they aren't written in a condescending tone and are helpful even to the educated person.Dad loves the book. I know, because he emails me nearly every day with some other factoid he's learned from it !

I like the book, but it assumes a lot.
Coming from Windows XP, I found a lot of the terminology different (things like "apps", for instance, are common with smartphone users (I'm not) but new to me). Nowhere could I find a definition nor an explanation...but to use the Windows 8 program you need some. I guess what I'm trying to say is the book assumes you know more than I knew. That said, as I get more familiar with Windows 8, I'm finding the book more useful because I know the system better.

Dealt with this Dummy very well!
Does what it says in the title. My husband went out, unsupervised, bought a laptop (he has no computer experience whatsoever), and expected that I would be fully versed in how to operate the thing. I work for a local authority where everything I need is literally at the click of a mouse, and I need do very little, so my heart sank when he presented this to me. I ordered this book right away, amid all sorts of warnings from my colleagues that "Windows 8 is a nightmare", and it arrived the very same day at my home! It's brilliant, words of one syllable for a Scotsman who doesn't know one Window from another, and explanations for each step. Phew! Now, I just need him to sign up to an online typing course - his painfully slow one-fingered stabbing at the keyboard is driving me to drink!

Help for computer illiterates!
I had just upgraded my computer to a new product and had installed the new Windows 8, which I found totally impossible to trawl around with the new format, so I did indeed find the book helpful. My real problem is that I don't really talk in computerspeak and so when I need some help I can never couch my query in proper computerese, or I can't actually find the section in the index. Consequently I don't get a helpful reply. I still prefer the layout of my previous Outlook program where all actions were easily accessed on the toolbars. It is a shame that Outlook is not compatible with Windows 8.On the other hand the setup is modern and clear to see (if not yet--for me--understandable) and I certainly like the graphics and presentation. All in all it is a big help to me, and one day I am sure I will get to the bottom of where to find things easily. I just need more time! I am after all very aged.

Not for me!
I bought this book as I has just bought a new laptop using Windows8. This seems to be a nightmare for everyone at first. I have used the "Dummies" books several years ago. This was a dull book and didn't move on very quickly. I read it through twice to give it a chance but I gave in and went back to Amazon for a different book, I found a book called " Brilliant Windows 8. It is printed in colour and has a comprehensive index. It also came with a dvd and was a really good buy

Very Good for Pensioners
Being a seventy-old pensioner, this book is ideal, plenty of pictures and it is written in simple English. Having recently purchased a new Windows 8 laptop, I need all the help possible, to find my around the new format. The content is very good and full of minute details. Having had it for only a short time, it has been of great help. Examining Amazon for helpful books on the subject, I consider this to be the BEST BUY.
