Does anyone know if they keep pine needles out of the ac unit?

I'm not near any pine trees so I can't answer %100 on pine needles but I keep my cover on all year round because I have 2 large trees above my unit and it definitely keeps out all of the debris even though there is a small "net like" cover for air flow.

Can this cover be used when running the air conditioning or does it need to be removed at that time?
