Play Alto Sax Today! Beginner's Pack: Book/Online Audio/DVD Pack

Play Alto Sax Today is much MORE than I expected.
I was asked to say what I didn't like about this Play Alto Sax Today. There is only one thing that they could improve on. That is giving more attention to embouchure. There are youtube videos about that that will help. I say that because I want you to succeed. Now going on with my review, I have been a trumpet player for 60+years so I started knowing absolutely NOTHING about the saxophone...not even the embouchure! I It is totally different. have actually only been starting to play for a week and already, I am rapidly improving. To a novice like myself I can only give this advice: by all means be patient with yourself and don't try to hurry through. You want to succeed! You can learn the alto saxophone using this method!!! Please don't ignore the DVD. I think you should go through it FIRST before you start on the book. That definitely will help and give you a "jump start". Jason Gillette is one sharp teacher. Once you complete the DVD successfully, you will be surprised how fast this goes. A word of caution: Go back through these lessons until you are satisfied before going on to the next one. Don't even leave a song or a note until you are satisfied with it. You will make progress! I know I did. They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Well, you can with "Play Alto Sax Today"...I am 72 and am able to learn this. I just wish they would have not used the word "today". It will take a little time. Great, wonderful, very deserving of 5 stars! I wish you MUCH success!

Great for beginners
For beginners, this is a great book. I played bass clarinet in high school, but that was 45 years ago! With the audio, you can keep going back until you perfect every note and work through the note changes. I think that it is a must for anyone teaching themselves the alto saxophone.

Great Beginner Book
Great for what it is. A beginners book. I believe it is the standard Middle school (or even elementary school student). I am 50 and have not played since high school and was looking for something to ease me back into playing. Got thru this in one evening and am pretty much done with it. I will probably use it for warming up for another month or so but that is probably it.But for a true beginner that has never played before I believe it would be much more useful. I say great for beginners because it mixes teaching with mostly known tunes so does not seem to be as boring as the books I remember as a kid. It's also great for learning on your own without a teacher since it has the DVD and CD. Not a bad price for all that is included. Everything you need to teach yourself to play at a Middle School level.

DVD is a waste of time. Book is spot on.
The DVD started off ok but once the instructor got to the first note he was epic fail. He doesnt explain how to play it. He just plays it and moves on. Other notes were explained later on however. For an absolute beginning instructional video, it was seriously lacking. Also the video sped through at a million miles an hour. If you were trying to learn everything you will spend more time pausing and re-winding then actually playing.DVD: Epic FailThe book was actually helpful and in a day I was playing rolling along and other boring little tunes. The sound of the sax is entralling enough to keep me wanting more or I'd have quit. It's hard to want to play such trifle stuff. I understand that it's necessary as a beginner to do this but why hasn't anyone come out with instructional tools that are a tad more modern? I do like the addition of the CD for sound comparison. Also the book does a good job of explaining embouchure. The book also teaches the notes backwards from the DVD. Not sure why they don't fit better, however, my suggestion is to throw the DVD out and not waste your time on it.Book/CD: Very Good

Good book but presume prior music knowledge
I bought this book for myself (adult) to teach myself to play the alto sax. I have VERY basic knowledge of music scales and could not before now read music. The first few pages were fine but as the book went on, there was a serious presumption that the reader konws how to read music. The CD is OK but my biggest challenge is that the play along music is not played on the alto sax. It's like accompanying music so if you are not familiar with the songs it will be hard to figure out if the notes you are playing are in fact correct and in tune. For a basic book I would have prefered if the CD tracks were played on the alto sax so I could be very clear what my notes should sound like. Good book for intermediate players who read music but frustrating for an absolute beginner.

Recommended.
Very good book and video. The video is 25 minutes and teaches the basics about getting the sax out of the case, putting it together, embrouchure, playing the first five notes, cleaning after playing and placing it back in the case. The book goes from the very basic to more advance I wish there was a book 2 to go with it for the more advance lessons.

Don't know where to start? Get this book its worth it!
Didn't know how to play and now I'm playing short songs from the lessons section. All in under a few weeks! I love glad I bought it. Highly recommend to the self starter.

Very Decent No Nonsense Video - Short & to the Point...
It's only about 25 mins long but I'm still glad I saw it and I'll be happy to watch it again a few times. It's a very low cost introduction and I think it's worth every penny. The other DVD I ordered and enjoyed was the Ultimate Beginners Series Alto Sax and that was an hour long. It was interesting to see the contrasting points of both videos and I'd definitely recommend them both just to see a couple of different approaches.

Dull from Beginning to End
If you want to actively put anyone off from learning saxophone this is the book for you. It's dull from beginning to end with the same boring nursery rhymes and tired tunes. Very boring, uninspiring and nothing but that tired cliche of "Learn to play" books that have been penned without any desire to teach or engage whatsoever.
