How the Internet Works

Short and Sweet, Useful and Neat
I ordered this book for a class and I have really enjoyed each chapter this book had to offer. I have learned a lot about Internet Computing. This book gives a step-by-step, detailed explanation for how all parts of the internet works. It has shown me lots that I didn't know and it has elaborated on the things I already knew something about. Good buy.

Good introductory book to the workings of the internet, BUT...
Could use an update. Things like 'How Blackberrys deliver email' should be dropped in favor of more relevant technology. Something like, 'How Iphones deliver email' would be good, for starters. And while there is an explanation for 'how online shopping works', why isn't there an explanation about how the underlying technology works? For example, how does HTTPS and SSL work? Similarly, while there is a discussion on the FTP protocol, BUT, for the most part, simple FTP has fallen out of favor for more secure protocols, such as Secure FTP or SFTP. Additional suggestions include - how 5g works, how cable modem/fiber and other broadband connections work and a comparison of all of the relevant broadband technology would be useful. How apps work would also be a useful addition. To be fair, much of contents of this book is still relevant, the quality/production values are excellent, excellent graphics, it has good, introductory information. VPN, for example, is discussed, It contains good explanations on various threats, but here again, there are things that should be added/updated, such as a discussion on ransomware, for example. My advice would be that if you are looking for a good introduction to the workings of the internet, this is a pretty good, (but not great) choice and the contents/quality, as I've mentioned are rock solid, for its time. Perhaps the author intends to release a revision, but for right now, it's likely that there are similar publications that are available that are more up to date than this one.

and highly recommend it for middle-school level
If you don't know anything about how the Internet works, read this book and you'll be an expert. It has pictures!!! The book is full of illustrations that almost anyone can understand. I used it to train my grandson, and highly recommend it for middle-school level. Maybe even late grade school! I don't know, those kids WOW me.

Hard to rate - it depends on the audience
Obviously if you are just learning about the Internet, your first choice is not going to be Tanenbaum's classic "Computer Networks". Likewise, if you are a network security professional, this book won't help you either. This book is basically a picture book with very easy to swallow pieces of accessible text between pictures. It is meant to acquaint the complete novice with the basics of the Internet. By basics I mean defining terms, what it means to connect to the Internet, and interacting with the Internet without getting your identity stolen. The illustrations are quite enlightening to beginners, but don't expect detailed instructions on how to accomplish tasks of any complexity. If you are looking for that kind of beginner's book I recommend "The Internet: The Missing Manual" by Biersdorfer, published by O'Reilly and Associates. If you have a friend or relative who is completely new to computers who just wants to know about the Internet, this will do. If they want to interact with the Internet in any meaningful way, get the Missing Manual book. I was generous and gave this book three stars because I'm not really sure it's fair to downgrade a book because I think it is too simple. That might have been its intent.

An Ideal Textbook for Newbies
I have used this book on multiple occasions as a textbook to teach colleagues about the internet. Yes it is simple in it's presentation - that is precisely the point. It is ideal for the person who has only been a consumer of web pages (which describes most people), and now needs to crawl under the hood as part of their job. They have to start somewhere that is simple, understandable, consumable and rememberable. This book does the trick.

I never knew
I read other reviews and they indicated that this book would explain, in plain language and pictures, what all this through the air" electronics was all about.I was very impressed that I could understand how it works at a level I wanted; not too simple and not too deep. I love this book.

For non-tech people: UGH!
It just isn't what I had hoped and needed -- which was a very BASIC understanding of technology It is a beautifully put together book -- beautifully illustrated, but it is at a MUCH MUCH higher level than I assumed in reading about it. This is for already really "tech" people.!!

Written well and concepts are explained in a clear concise manner
Bought this book used and it is a little out of date. However the overall concepts still apply and most of the technology (although old) is still in use today. Written well and easy to understand. I do have a technical background, but concepts are simple enough for most to understand.
