Best of the Best
All of Kate West's books are great, informative, and easy to follow. If you are wanting to learn about Wicca, I advise you to purchase this book, The Real Witches Coven, plus The Real Witches Book of S[ells and Rituals, and finally The Real Witches Handbook. If you have all three, that will be all that you need to get a really good start on the subject. Her books are easy to understand and she is a great teacher. She teaches so that you will learn.---you will not need a dictionary next to you to read her books, as they are written in everyday language. Great books and great author. Thank you.

Great book, easy to read and wonderful explanations...
I loved this book- so much that I could hardly put it down and finished it in just two days! Kate West not only describes what makes a successful coven, she gives detailed explanations on WHY some things have or haven't worked for other coveners. While I don't exactly share every belief that she has, she's left each idea open to interpretation and even offers alternatives in some cases. Whether you'd like to form a coven, improve a coven, be a better covener, or join a coven, this is a great book and I highly recommend it.

Good Beginner Guide
This book is about how to start your own coven, whether you've been practicing by yourself for a while and now want to start a group because you can't find one already in practice that you like or if you want to do something different than what's out there. Its a pretty basic book, easy to read, and covers everything from choosing or building a coven structure to creating necessary rules to what to do when people break those rules to celebrating and working magic at sabbats and esbats. The author also talks about the virtues and issues with skyclad vs robes vs street clothes, how a good covener should behave, potential issues that might arise between coveners and/or their coven leaders, in particular the High Priestess. She gives an overview of what she thinks the degree system and parts of circle creation is all about. While, the back of the book contains a list of common words and definitions related to coven and Craft practice. One quibble might be that this book should have been called "The Real Wiccan Coven" as it is very Wiccan in structure and tone. Not all Witches practice this way or ascribe to the beliefs laid out in this book and the author doesn't really make it clear that the coven she is basically describing in this book--one assumes based mainly off her own group(s)--is Wiccan. She kind of takes some things for granted when she shouldn't have, but might have been better off throwing in more caveats that this is how many Wiccan covens operate, not all Witch covens.Anyone who has been around in the Craft for a few years knows that no two covens are exactly alike and there are many forms of Wiccan Craft, let alone Witchcraft. However, as this book is laid out for newbies for the main part, it might have been better to provide additional examples of types of covens. For example, she ascribes to a structure with 3 degrees and not all covens do so. Someone new to the Craft who desires to create their own coven might think this is absolutely necessary to how you run a group...when its not. She does mention this, but doesn't provide any examples of how a coven with less or no degrees might work. She also talks about how some covens are run by the group voting, some by coven leaders who share in the burden, and some by the High Priestess. The main examples in this book lean towards groups run by the final edict of the High Priestess, though. It might have been a good addition to the book to interview coven members and coven leaders who run things differently.Generally, the book tries to be as inclusive as it can, but it tended to provide useful examples mainly of how the author practices and has experience with. That's hardly surprising, but it you're going to sell the work as here's how a "real" Witch coven practices and is structured and what they believe, then more examples would have been better so that the reader might not just assume that how the author does things and how she views things is the one, right, true, and only way of running a Witch coven. The book contains a fair amount of useful info in a nice concise writing style and might make a good gift to someone just starting out running or creating their own coven, but it should only be a beginning point and the author's perspective should only be viewed as one of many ways of looking at things.
