Love it!
This is the kind of book you can read aloud again and again (and again!) and never tire of the language or the story. It introduces us to life in a small Brazilian town and to the resourceful Felipe, who fashions a soccer ball out of "borrowed" socks from his neighbors. It's a wonderful tale of ingenuity, community, cooperation, and generosity. I loved the sprinkling of Portuguese words scattered throughout the story--especially the animal sounds. As an added bonus, an author's note at the end tells us that the author's father told her stories about making soccer balls of socks when he was a boy! I love that personal touch.

Delightful book
This is a delightful book. I like that Felipe is a bit naughty in his efforts to make a soccer ball. Of course, this sock thief leaves mangoes and even returns the socks. You'll see at the end, the sock owners know what's happening to their socks too.The book is also a great introduction to another culture. Felipe is in Brazil and the author’s note page includes Portuguese. We enjoyed reading this and are happy to add this to our picture book collection.

A beautifully written and illustrated book
A beautifully written and illustrated book. My love for books began when I worked at a public library when I was in high school. Since then I started my own collection of children's books that I hope to share someday with my future grand-children. This will definitely be one of them! I was fortunate to meet the author at a book signing which makes this book even more special.

A Wonderful Book!
A wonderful book! I bought this book for my 5 year old great nephew and we read it over and over and over and over! It is a sweet, heartwarming story & the illustrations are fabulous. My great nephew love repeating the Portuguese words - a really nice touch. I particularly liked the Author's comments at the end of the book about the origins of the story.

Highly Recommended!
An enchanting story filled with ingenuity and humor. The reader cannot help but fall in love with Felipe's gumption and the creative prowess that helps him realize his goal. As a kindergarten teacher, I highly recommend this multicultural book for young readers, both in the classroom and at home.

great book - but came with a cracked spine and torn dust jacket
A really great story that I need to use in an upcoming lesson on Brazil. However, I was disappointed to see a torn dust jacket and cracked spine on a book I bought new.

Wonderful Global Picture Book!
We love The Sock Thief! This is an absolutely wonderful story! It is a part of a homeschool curriculum we are using and I am very grateful as we might not have discovered it otherwise. The Sock Thief tells the story of a sweet boy growing up in Brazil who, once per week, secretly (or so he thinks) borrows socks from his neighbours in order to make a soccer ball for himself and his friends. The book features examples of Portuguese throughout (which my daughter loves to repeat) and beautifully showcases important elements of Brazilian culture. I appreciate the opportunity to spark discussion about the wider world and add another diverse title to our home library. The book is beautifully illustrated and the writing is lyrical. Highly recommended!
