Much needed and informative reference
"Landscaping with Conifers and Ginkgo for the Southeast" is a welcome and well researched reference. It's been long needed by plant folks who've largely written off conifers in landscaping, a large number of which aren't adapted to the Southeast's high heat and humidity. This definite resource was authored by the two most knowledgeable conifer researchers who've been collecting and analyzing data for years. Tom Cox has used his own extensive arboretum as a test bed for hundreds of conifer varieties. Cox Arboretum <[...]> incorporates more than 4,000 living specimens, displaying one of the largest private collections of temperate flora in the entire United States.A former national president of the American Conifer Society <[...]>, Tom's book incorporates knowledge gained from his world travels in search of conifers that might be adaptable to the Southeastern U.S. Cox Arboretum contains 600 trees representing some 40 countries. In the book he co-authored, Dr. John M. Ruter distills results of evaluations he conducted for more than 15 years at the Coastal Plain Research Arboretum in Tifton, Ga. Ruter determined to change the awareness and image of conifers in the Coastal Plain region, where they're often thought of only as pine trees for forestry or junipers for landscaping. Dr. Ruter is now Professor of Horticulture at the University of Georgia where he continues his research. His book updates data on new conifer varieties which will be introduced in the near future. The reader will gain a new appreciation for and learn fascinating facts about the Ginko Biloba, a living fossil. It's a unique species recognizably similar to fossils dating back 270 million years. But the primary purpose of "Landscaping with Conifers and Ginkgo for the Southeast" is to provides the single, most authoritative source of information on conifer adaptability for the Southeast. With well written text and many previously unpublished photos, experience for yourself how well it succeeds. Richard S. George, Macon, Ga. Senior Master Gardener

A Must Have!!!
Wow! Finally, a book on conifers designed for the southeast. This is a must have for those planting any conifers in the region. This has become a new gradening go to for me. I only wish I had bought it sooner and saved a bunch of money on plants with inaccurate/unreliable information. This book not only explains where and why some conifers may/may not work in certain regions, but also gives great planting information and reliable growth and size estimates. It even sites examples of these plants where you can find them growing in the south. Best gardening book I have found in a long time.

Great for Southeastern Gardeners
It's special to get a plant book written by someone with broad first hand experience with their subject matter who garden in environmental conditions similiar to your own. Conifers have perhaps an unjustified reputation as being difficult in the southeast for a range of reasons. This book by two experienced southern plantsmen tells of their successful experiences growing a wide range of conifers in the southeastern climate and gives experienced advice on selections and valuable guidance for best results in your garden. This is "the conifer book" for southern gardners. What else could you ask for, and at such a reasonable price.

Wonderful SE Conifer resource
It's hard to give science books a "5" because they are out of scientific data by the time they are published. However, the authors are experts on this field, and I have visited Dr. Cox's beautiful property in North Georgia which is fantastic!Go if you ever get a chance!!

Finally a book for the south!
This book is a must for conifer lovers who live in the south. It is amazing how many choice conifers can be grown in the south. The section on diseases and pests is very helpful. The authors have done an excellent job. The photographs are lovely and is an asset to those who want pictures!.

Great Information!
Terrific book for those of us here in the Southeast that want to pretend we are in the Pacific Northwest and grow unusual conifers. Plenty of great information on which species will grow, which may grow and which probably won't grow in Zones 6, 7 and 8.
