What is the best lens to buy for this?

Wide angle zoom such as the 17-40mm a 50mm cheapie is good to- a 7-200 is a great lens, I have an 85mm 1.8 which is a really great lens with great color and creamy bokah- it's relatively cheap at around 400, but has no image stabilizer, but still a great lens for portraits and shallow epth of field shots- sigma 50-500 OS is a goodish long zoom- but I use that lens on my canon 7D . If you want to avoid lens distortion, then stick with lenses from 28mm and above- 28mm lens will give some distortion, but not nearly as bad as the wider angles lenses- wide angle lenses are kind of 'specialty lenses' where you need to learn to use them (include soemthign in the foregroudn rioght up close to lens- don't tilt lens up or down to avoid severe distortion- etc- for landscape shots, they are ok- sure the 'include a lot of scenery' but everythign looks distant and small- some wide angle shots can work well, but they are better in my opinion for closer wide angle situations swuch as brooks, pools, etc- I use my 17-40 all the time in the woods for brook shots

Can the 1D-X somehow use AA batteries (like other EOS cameras with battery grips can)?

No. I have never seen this function available. The 1D Series use a completely different HUGE battery compared to the 'regular' one used by Rebel, 5D, 6D, 60D, 7D, etc.

I'm using the 300 f2.8 IS II with 2xIII extender for sports. Results are mixed. Will I get better results with a 1DX?

I have owned and used all EOS-1 bodies, including the present EOS-1D X and without a doubt, it is the best FF DSLR for sports and wildlife. First reason is the 61-point AF system, with one to five cross-type AF points at f/2.8, 10 to 20 cross-type AF points at f/4, and 15 to 21 cross-type AF points at f/5.6. 1 cross-type AF point at f/8.* (The number of cross-type AF points will differ depending on the lens.)   Second reason is the AF Function Registration/Switching. With a Custom Function, four types of AF function settings can be registered in a group: 1. AF area selection mode, 2. AI Servo tracking sensitivity, 3. AI Servo AF tracking method, and 4. Does/can the 1dx use a cfexpress card?

NO, the 1DX uses dual CF cards. CFEx cards will not fit the slots. A later iteration of the 1DX (the Mark III) uses CFEx cards.
