Decreased the time needed for showerpan
This was the first time I used a pre-formed shower underlayment and doubt that I will ever go back to the previous method (deck mud and membrane liners). The primary reason is time and ease of installation. If done right, using multiple layers of deck mud and membrane sealer can take a couple weeks to completely dry, which I find is most important to avoid grout cracks and broken tiles. Plus, it was always a challenge to get the slope just right to avoid pooling. All I had to do was trim the tray to fit and apply the tape to the edges and I was done! The slope was perfect and the drain fit right in (also used the Schluter assembly). I installed the heated floor wire the next day. I have built three showers with deck mud and after using this tray, I am definitely planning on using this for future projects.

will never do a mud bed again
This worked great for my walk in shower. Easy to cut and fit... The most important thing is to make sure your drain hole and the hole of the pan match perfectly. If you mess up or have a gap at your edge do not worry! you can pack it in with mortar then place membrane on top of it that overlaps an inch of the shower pan, just remember your 1/4 inch per foot slope.Below are the steps I took but before that I wanted to answer some questions you may have but you cannot find answers to (yet) on the internetDo you need to use the Schluter foam for the walls or their foam barrier? No this works as a regular shower pan, I do recommend buying the same brand drain kit... Others will work but their brand is comparably priced, fits perfect, and it comes with Schluter brand membrane covers for the drain and for your faucets. For the walls and barrier: I decided to save some money and just do the walls framed with treated 2x4's cover the frame with mold proof backerboard (1/4 inch) covered them with the mesh membrane (cheaper to buy from Amazon) using liquid membrane from Home Depot to adhere the mesh membrane to the BackerboardFor the shower pan:1. I dry fit and cut the pan2. Added a layer of mortar to adhere the pan to my baseboard using the recommended trowel and pressed the pan into my baseboard3. filled in my edge gaps with mortar then added a membrane on the newly added mortar to overlap an inch over the pan. (liquid membrane as the glue then added mesh membrane on top.)4. Tiled my bedpan, when I got to the drain, used the foam template given to fit it, then packed mud under the drain and pressed it in so I had a proper fit, then tiled under it while the mortar was still setting under the drain so I could adjust the drain based off the tile.I hope this helps someone!

Works well, definitely price hiked
Works well enough, it was tricky to get my waterproof vinyl tile to follow the slope in the middle. The drop off was a bit too significant and the tile broke its lock with the surrounding tile. Overall good product if you don't want the headache of figuring out the slope yourself. For a piece of foam this pricing is outrageous, but I guess lack of competition in the market has left them in charge of setting the price.

Do not recommend
A nice idea in theroy, but the pan has never adhered properly to the sub floor, causing tiles to buckle and crack, a very expensive repair on my end. I should have done it properly to begin with. Very limited instructions from manufacturer, maybe there is a better way to adhere to subfloor? I used thin set which I now think maybe I should have used mortar or construction adhesive….I see a world in which this could be a great product and work as expected, unfortunately I don’t live in it.

Much improved over the priginal shluter foam bases.
I am a remodeling contactor. I stopped using these foam bases several years ago because we were having problems with the foam compressing during installation and some after a short time in service. We changed to a hybrid system of reinforced conrete base with the shluter drain and membrane on that. A few moths ago i decided to order one of the foam bases again to give them another try. I was pleasantly surprised. These are much improved in 3 ways. 1) They are now reasonably priced 2) They changed the foam type to be very dense with more than enough compression resistance. 3) The pre applied membrane to the base which originally had to be feild applied.I will go back to using these again for standard footprint showers. Highly recommend.
