VIKINGS BLADE Adjustable Double Edge Safety Razor + Luxury Case. Smooth, Reusable, Eco-Friendly (The Emperor “Augustus”)

I used to use straight razors but never had the time to really get into sharpening my blades so I went to the next best thing, a safety razor. My first was the Edwin Jagger De89lbl and my second razor was a Parker99R. The Emperor Augustus is my third and I really love this thing. I broke my Parker last night and ordered the Emperor immediately and received it this afternoon and had to try it out. Very little face prep, just wiped down my face with a hot towel and used my trusty Dirty Bird scuttle to froth my soap. I love that thing. I misread how the adjustment worked and made it a bit too aggressive but it didn't take long for me to realize my error. I find that opening the butterfly and setting the adjustment and closing it again works best for me. When you're in a hurry and don't have time to properly prep, setting to a milder number is WONDERFUL. As I get more familiar with this instrument I'm sure I'll be making adjustments for different stages of my shave and I really love having that option. I'm sure there are a lot of adjustable safeties out there but this thing is so easy to use and I love the heft of it, too; and the grip is sure. Since I've only had this thing barely a day I may have more to add later, but right now I'm very glad I broke my Parker. It was a great excuse to treat myself with the Augustus. Edit 8/15/2020 It's been over a year since I purchased this blade. I'm even happier now with my Augustus than the day I received it. I'm no shaving expert, but because I'm a straight-razor flunkie I do have a few extra items. I have a scuttle, shaving cup, shaving brush and I use shaving soap. All those things make for a better shaving experience when used properly. 1. I have those really nice Israeli blades but I have some Shark blades and I thought I'd give those a go again because they didn't do as nice a job in my old safeties like my Edwin Jagger. With the Augustus, at least when the blades were new, I noticed no real difference. The Shark's might still dull faster, I'm not sure. I'm still experimenting with that. 2. For the Augustus, being an adjustable razor is its most important and useful feature. I find that if I let my beard grow out too much, placing the Augustus on its most aggressive rating works wonders, and with later passes reduce that aggression to allow for a closer shave. YMMV on that and everyone's beard is different, but that works for me. 3. When inserting the blade, its best to put the blade on it's most aggressive setting, which allows the door to open its widest. Then seat the blade and back off the aggression about 3/4 (around 6 or 7) before closing the blade. This allows the clamshell to close without catching on the blade. 4. I wipe down my Augustus with toilet paper to soak up any water before storing. 5. The workmanship is excellent. I've experienced no issues, and it looks as nice as the day I received it. The blade settings is easy to set and is numbered to help you remember what works for you for any situation. I've not experienced any binding on working parts at all. 6. The feel of this blade in my hand is just right. It's heavy enough that it's weight applies enough pressure to do the work and the handle is grippy and comfortable. 7. I think the craftsmanship on this blade is so good I kept the box it came in and use that to store my blade in my office, away from humid air in the bathroom, because the box and razor looks so nice together. That's just me being weird, I suppose. For item 2, sometimes I have to wipe off my face with a towel and re-apply soap before continuing on my first pass if my beard's gotten away from me (a week's growth) and I've only been able to prep my face with a warm-hot towel for 2 minutes or so. A hot shower does wonders for face prep. I just wanted to let anyone know who might be interested in the Augustus that I found it worthwhile to come back here a year later to relate how happy I am with mine. In case some of you were wondering, if I have such a nice blade why do I let my beard grow out for a week or more? Blame my laziness and working from home so much in today's crazy world. I didn't know this would become a problem, but my Augustus helps me makes up for some of my personal shortcomings.

A very well built, heavy (a good thing), and something that one wouldn't consider, a handsome looking shaving tool. Used it for the first time, set it on 4, comes with a pack of razors and used one of them. An extremely comfortable, easy, very close shave. My face was smooth, zero stubble, no nicks, gouges, slices on any part of my face caused by this razor. It was actually enjoyable unlike it being a chore with my old razor. The one thing I noticed is the numbers on the adjustment ring are not highlighted in white as it is pictured on this site. A little hard to read for an old guy like myself. But just a minor thing, I still highly recommend this shaver, and at this price point, a very good quality razor. And no, these guys are not paying me to say this and they didn't give me one of these to sample... would have been nice, just sayin'. P.S. Went to register my razor on the Viking website. Looks like the Augustus retails for $70!! Seems like I got a good deal. P.P.S. This razor is from a business in Australia, didn't know that. Happy to support our friends from down under!

It's It's well made razor and is pretty nice looking. I just don't get a very good shave with it. I have been using safety razors for about 15 years so I know what I am doing but I get cut every time I use this and the shave is not close. It is hard to figure out how to hold the correct angle on it. On my Merkur I can rest the rounded part of the razor against my face to help guide the correct angle. HENSON makes a razor that as long as the flat part is held against your face it is always the correct angle. This razor has nothing to help guide because of its design so I can never hold the correct angle and I hurt my face almost every time and I cannot get a skin close shave even using very sharp feather razors. ***Update*** raised to 4 stars. After using for a while now the shaves are better. I still can't get a 100% clean shave but this razor is so easy to rinse out and I never get shaving rash anymore. With the multi blade razors, after going over spots multiple times, it would be the same as dragging this across your face about 20 times, which is not necessary. Maybe 2 or 3 passes and you are good. No irritation and no rashes, plus cheap blades. Good razor to jump into the market with. The gap adjustment is a nice feature too.

Have been using the Emperor Augustus razor for 6 months now. I am sharing some of my thoughts. I've started DE shaving 8 months ago. My first razor was a Qshave butterfly. It was a really good mild razor for beginner. After one month of training with the Qshave, I bought this Augustus razor from Vikings Blade. At first, I was somewhat disappointed. The reasons were: 1. The craftsmanship did not seem to match the quality of the razor. I could see the unpolished edge on the butterfly plate. Also, the blade did not align perfectly. Although It did not affect the quality of shaving. 2. The Emperor was different than the Qshave I had. The technique I built up with the Qshave did not work well with this one. I had to relearn again. For a beginner, that was difficult and upsetting. I emailed Vikings Blade with the problems I had. They replied rather quickly (usually within a day or two every time). They explained that the unpolished part of the razor was due to the difficultly of processing bronze. Which was not impossible, but they decided not to do that since it did not effect the function anyway and could keep the cost affordable. They told me the blade alignment was within acceptable parameter and should not affect the shave quality. And for my shaving problem, they were very patient and guided me through my learning process via emails. They asked me to try the razor for some time and would send me another model if It did not work out for me at the end. The customer service is one of the best I have seen. I decided to try the razor for a bit longer and I am glad I did. It works very well for me now and has become my daily razor. If it breaks I might get another one of this model. The reason that it's not 100% is due to the extra cost for delivering/importing the razor to Canada. Which is like $100+ (140CAD+ on amazon.ca x.x) What I think after 6 months of uses: 1. Material The Material used in the razor feels really solid. I intend to use the razor for many years like the old Gillette safety razors. 2. Razor The weight is good, butterfly is very useful and adjustable is very handy. Also the handle grasp really well and it never slips on me. 3. Most important: Shaving The razor is very smooth. It is hard to cut yourself. I am a careless person; I cut myself often with the old plastic disposable razor and the razor burn was really bad. But with this Vikings Blade Emperor, I only cut myself maybe one time in the past 6 months as I remember. I was pressing really hard on the neck area that time. Now that my skill is getting improved, I rarely nick myself bad enough to even see red dot. In worst cases I got light burn which fades away fast after aftershave balm. The razor does have 2 different sides. One is flat and one with teeth bumps. They feel differently when shaving but I am not sure if there is any different in shaving quality. The flat side does feel smoother. 4. Adjustable After testing for many settings, I am now settling on level 3. With my skill improved, I am able to get pretty good shave in 3-4 passes. (4th for the neck area which is very hard to clean). If I spend some more time with better preparation, I can sometimes get BBS. 5. Customer service Best one I have seen. They are very helpful and nice. Without the help from them, the process for a beginner shaver like me would have had hard time getting through the process. They patiently answered all my question about the razor and my other questions related to shaving. Final thought: This razor is very good for those who wants a quality butterfly adjustable. This razor is very smooth and perfect for those who worry about cutting themselves. Vikings Blade is a very good company and it has one of the best customer services around. I am glad I found the razor that I want to settle down in my 2nd try. :)

About 20 years ago I learned how to shave with a SE razor. That got lost somehow and Gillette in all their wisdom, sent me a Mach 3 razor on my 18th birthday which I used for all of a 2 years before becoming fed up with shaving with it and the money it cost, and grew a beard for 12 or so years. Now with the pandemic and wearing a mask constantly I needed to get clean shaven again. (or at least mostly). On Prime day I saw another DE Razor for a really good price and bought it. And for the price and what it was as a cheap TTO DE safety razor, it was great. Unfortunately for me I also have sensitive skin and a fairly soft beard. So the cheap razor I bought was way too aggressive for me overall, especially for my neck (my face was a chewed up mess for that 1st week of shaving, it was not fun). I resolved to find something that would suit my needs and I ended up choosing between the Merkur Furtur and the various styles of the Viking Emperor (Standard, Augustus and Meiji). I ended up choosing the standard Emperor because... well... I was worried that I'd forget to completely dry the razor and ruin the nice finishes of the Agustus and Meiji (also I wanted the longer handle so Meiji was a no go), and I wanted the grip which the Merkur did not have. And so I've used it for a week, which brings me to this review (and I don't often review things on Amazon, but my experience has been so positive in this week, that I feel compelled to) So first, the craftsmanship is superb. It has great weight, the handle is a good thickness and length for control. The only minor complaint I have is that as a spring loaded TTO DE Razor it can get a bit finicky. Nothing too crazy though. Fixing the issues takes seconds, usually loosening the door holding it down and re-tightening it. I was concerned about the burrs that they mentioned and the negative reviews talking about it. But now after using it, Those fears are gone. Yes, you will notice the blade looking slightly curvy, but since many reviewers said to try it before returning it, I did and I am happy I did. Now lets talk about the shave. To preface I'm going to say outright that I use settings 1 and 5 for every shave. I use 1 for first pass and 5 for second (and third if necessary). The best part of this razor is the scalloped and smooth sides of the blade, even more than the adjustable aggression. I use scalloped side for my face and smooth for my neck and it is just amazing. I get less razor burn and a better shave every time. Now again, I cannot call myself a complete beginner, but at the same time it has been so long that I really feel like I had to relearn how to shave with a safety razor. And going from a cheaper one for a week, to this one for a week, it is literally night and day difference. A friend who also has sensitive skin suggested I get a Feather which was excessively expensive, but then I found this and honestly, this might be my lifetime razor now. I'm not sure if I'll ever go beyond 5 again (on my second time shaving with the Emperor I decided to try 2 and 6, which was a mistake. Still gave me a great shave, but it was too aggressive for my skin, and if a 6 is too aggressive I don't want to think about what max is like. As it is 5 is pushing it, but I feel like between 4 and 5, 5 gives better shave while still being mild enough for me) I'll update this review should anything go wrong, but considering the other reviews and the company seeming to have a really good customer service, I doubt that will be any issue. If you're looking for a TTO DE razor for sensitive skin or a razor with amazing versatility so you don't need multiple razors for different needs, this is definitely one to look at.

Not going to bash the product. Thought I wanted a new safety razor so I figured I'd give another brand a try. It's not a bad razor by any means. And for the price you pay the build quality is nice. Very easy to operate and make adjustments to get a closer shave. However I would recommend this razor to someone just starting out using a safety razor. It's heavy and the adjustable blade will make it easy for someone to get acclimated to using one without the risk of cutting yourself severely like with some non-adjustable safety razors. Absolutely hate the blades that come with the razor. But I think the product overall is a good choice for those who have never used a safety razor. P.S. buy shark super chrome blades excellent blade for sensitive skin and avoiding irritation, and still able to achieve that smooth close shave.

As many guys have experienced, I worked in a professional capacity most of my life and shaved every day, mostly with cartridge razors for the last 40 years, or as long as they have been available. Being retired I realized that cartridge razors have a significant drawback. I no longer need to shave every day, and usually have 3-4 days growth when I do. The problem with cartridge razors is that with 3, 4, or 5 micro thin (narrow) blades stacked a fraction of a millimeter apart, the razor does not want to find the skin surface. I have to "saw" my way down to get skin level. I don't care what kind of cartridge you use you will have that problem and that is annoying and uncomfortable. After several weeks getting back into the use of this DE razor I can offer the following. First off, if you are not 16-20 years old, I doubt you will be happy with the "Mild" blades. Although it was my first attempts at shaving with DE blades in 40 years, I had extreme difficulty shaving with the mild blade. It dragged and was almost dangerous shaving my chin whiskers which it would not cut well at all. I adjusted up to a 4-5 setting and backed off because I could feel the blade on my skin in a rather dangerous fashion. Reminded me of the old saying about nothing being more dangerous than a dull knife. For most guys the "Hot" blade is what you want, and they are superb. Like a hot knife through butter. The difference between the two blades is actually quite surprising to me. I'm not sure I understand what the VB thought process is on this. Mild blades are shipped with the razor btw. A setting of 2-3 with the hot blade resulted in not even feeling the blade against my skin which is what should happen. Secondly, a critical part of the regimen in getting the best shave is to use a pre-shave oil. I bought the Viking Sandalwood oil and love it. It smells great and feels great. Lubricates and protects against nicks and is not a strong overpowering smell like some commenters said. It feels great on your skin after shaving as well, better than any of the canned gel shave creams I have used over the years. I also think it will compliment almost any after shave or cologne you would like to follow with. Like most of us I have a spot or two that can be a source of a nick if I am not careful, but I shaved across these spots without even thinking and no issues. I have had no problems with blade alignment, and my only observation is that the razor is far heavier than any cartridge razor setup. You will have to get used to it, but the instructions are correct, there is no need to force the razor against your skin (with the correct blade), especially when you get the preparation right. My only complaint about the razor is the dial markings need to be more prominent. Hard to see with water and shave cream all over. I do intend to try the VB shave cream in the near future to put all the pieces of the puzzle together. Edit 8/19/2024: After multiple uses of this razor I have to report an unusual event. At some point in the process of shaving two weeks ago and unbeknownst to me the adjustment ring lost control of the blade holding mechanism. I had cut my cheek simply resting the razor on my sideburn and then nicked my chin before I realized the damage had occurred. I have found that when the ring is adjusted numerically upward from about a 3 to 4 setting upwards while shaving it can freewheel and lose control of the razor head. If I follow the relatively vague mfr adjustment instructions to correct loose or misaligned blades (which shouldn’t happen) I can get the ring snugly threaded again, but it has a propensity to disengage again. I am now very careful about making adjustments while shaving. Like several of the previous reviews and some prior to mine, this leaves me with doubts as to the mechanical quality of this razor. This is a serious liability to anyone tuning their new razor to suit their shaving requirements. It is beyond warranty now so I will continue to use it but will do so with caution. Appropriate reduction in my previous rating has been applied.

I have a lot of things to say, so if you want the tl;dr, here it is: You want to buy this. First things first: this is my second Vikings Blade product. I first purchased their cheaper Chieftain starter handle, and that review can be found here [https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R1ABZ8A8WBBJKW?ref=pf_ov_at_pdctrvw_srp]. While I loved it, my particular handle snapped apart at one of the two butterfly enclosures after five months, as mentioned and shown in that review. Vikings Blade contacted me and offered a fix [as can also be seen on that review], which I bartered into a free upgrade replacement to The Crusader. Honestly? Considering this is only about 12$ more than The Chieftain, it's WORLDS better in every way, and I'd have been happy to pay for it considering the huge leap. When my Chieftain broke, I was out of town for a while and had to buy a replacement at a local shave shop; their cheapest handle was nearly 100$ and, frankly, it's a piece of garbage. It's feather-light [a bad thing, trust me], and swapping the blades is much more inconvenient than the simple butterfly enclosure on either Viking. The Crusader is longer, heavier, grippier on the handle, and overall aesthetically more pleasing than the Chieftain. A cool bronze/black as opposed to the entirely silver look, and the material of the black handle is less slippery than the all-metal construction of the Chieftain. The head is weighted in such a way as to let you apply the minimum amount of pressure, as gravity does most of the work. Considering how sharp the blades you might be using are, you want to be able to press down as little as you can, which is much more difficult to do when your razor handle is feather-light. Now on to the shave. Both Viking handles come with some "Mild" blades, and those are GREAT for when you're just starting out as you're much less likely to pierce the skin while you're still getting used to how different this is from disposable razors. That said, safety razors are surprisingly simple to get used to, and I didn't feel the need to buy anything other than regular double-sided blades on my next visit to a drug store. I'm very pale-skinned, so I've always had a frustration with the leg-shaving experience: no matter how vigorous my efforts or which company's disposables I used, I could never get a close enough shave that it really mattered, because you could always see the hair that remained just beneath the reachable skin layer and it made the entire experience frustrating and somewhat fruitless. From my FIRST shave with The Chieftain, I immediately knew I'd never be going back to disposables over safety razors. I've been shaving my legs for 15 years, and I'd NEVER had a closer shave than one with a safety razor. On top of that, get this: NO razor burn. Dealing with itching and light burning after a shave regardless of what shaving cream I used or which brand of razor I was using is just something I'd accepted as a fact of life, and the COMPLETE lack of that after just my first, clumsy foray into safety razor shaving was an awakening. All I did afterwards was put lotion on my legs, which you should be doing anyway regardless of how you shave. I'd never had smoother legs. After dealing with The Chieftain slipping around in my hands because the handle isn't particularly grippy and it's a little too short, I would wholly recommend The Crusader as a starter instead if you have even the slightest inkling that you might never go back after starting to use a safety razor over a disposable. Obviously you'll get the best results if you're soaking in a tub so you can take your time without running water washing off whatever shaving cream you're using, but after some practice, you'll find that even in a shower you can do a fast and efficient job without slicing up your legs. That said, even in a shower vs. a bath, I *do* recommend investing in a good brush, bowl and shaving soap set [I got this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072XC76T6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&th=1]. The action of lathering up using the brush, especially if you've been soaking for a bit, really helps bring the hairs out to make sure you're getting the closest shave you can, and the weight and length of The Crusader makes it by far the best of the now FOUR total safety razor handles I've used, including The Chieftain. Make sure you wash it out and dry it off when you're done using it to protect the metal, and it should last you a very long time. As an extremely hair-averse freak, I'll just straight-up say that switching from disposables to safety razors irrevocably changed my life for the better, and I would recommend The Crusader as the only handle you'll ever need if you're thinking of starting down this path. I shave my legs as well as my arms and my You Know™, so having a reliable and efficient way of removing all that hair is a huge boon. I love a ritual, so honestly I've somehow found that using The Crusader has become something that's almost fun because of all the prep I put into it. I'm a weirdo who's probably alone in that, but even then, I think the fact that this gives an absolutely killer shave is undeniable, whether you're shaving just your face or your entire freakin' body.

No doubt there is plenty of marketing hype-Australian owned, Chinese manufactured and marketed from the USA. Also it is expensive. However as a retiree I have the time and inclination to indulge in wet shaving. Let me tell you "The Vikings Blade Crusader is well crafted, has heft and superb balance. The shave is very smooth and if done properly does not leave any razor burn.Much of the credit goes to the Japanese blades that I use. I prefer it to the Gillette Fusion which I have been using until now. ***Three years later/It looks better in real life then in the photos above. Even after three years of daily shaving it looks brand new. I prefer the butterfly design over all others.

The FIRST thing to consider while using this item is that, you should not be in a hurry to do that 2 minute shave, splash and leave for the day. For that - use a Philishave. Relax. Organize your blades, shaving brush, shave cream, warm water, antiseptic solution, etc. Let the first brush strokes wet the stubble first. It will loosen the skin and make the hair soft. After a rich lather up, use a medium setting of 4-5 and gently let the weight of the razor fall on the skin and with a good blade (I use 7 o'clock super platinum) with a few repeated strokes, the results are bound to be excellent. Again, one should not hurry. The habit of taking a long swipe with the cartridge razor from top to bottom of the face will not work for swivel butterfly systems, and this piece is genuinely a master of its art. I refrained from writing a review till I had used it for about a month at least, and with this experience I can say that it does take some time to get used to. First of all - as with automatic watches and fountain pens, this is a vintage product. I repeat, one should not hurry. Relax and enjoy the leisurely comfort (almost an indulgence) of A-1 grade shaving. I have another Viking Emperor - the MEIJI edition (Vintage Bronze and Raven Black) and I use it in another city where I have a parallel establishment. Both these products need to be handled with care and due diligence - much like a coveted TAG or the Seamaster Professional.....so it is, with these razors. Welcome to elegant shaving - I am thoroughly satisfied, and will use due discretion to decide, whom, among my friends and relatives, should I gift these items to, when I purchase again.
