some of the better gable films.
i have to confess that i'm not the biggest clark gable fan in the world but nevertheless, there are some pretty good films in this set. i was a bit disappointed to discover that his films like "red dust," "mutiny on the bounty" and "possessed" had been left out. if one or more of those titles had been added also, this would be a top dvd set of any hollywood star. for my money, "san francisco," "boom town" and "china seas" are the best titles in this collection. they all have good storylines, some decent acting and directing but they are also taken from the earlier part of gable's career which makes it all the more interesting. "dancing lady, and "mogambo" aren't terrible films by any means but they aren't really my sort of thing. "wife vs. secretary" is an interesting film which balances comedy with drama and it works well enough but there didn't seem to be that same spark between gable and frequent co-star jean harlow. still, a perfectly watchable film. "M.G.M" could never be accused of being tight when it came to providing their films with a generous budget and these six films are no exception. the production values are excellent for the most part. i didn't expect much in the way of special features and indeed, the only ones on display are a few short films or cartoons. on the "san francisco" dvd however, there is an alternative ending to the 1936 film(which is nothing worth mentioning) and also a documentary on gable himself. presented by liam neeson, this is a fairly entertaining and informative programme but at a running time of 46 minutes, i felt that a lot more could have been added in addition. if you are looking to begin watching clark gable films, then this dvd collection is a good enough place to start.
