For what it is, its pretty good
I had low expectations. I'm a twenty-something creative writing major and I just wanted a book I could get through quickly and get some mild enjoyment out of over my winter holiday. It took me approximatly 5 hours to read (and I'm kind of a slow reader) so it met my first expectation. As far as being mildly enjoyable it hit the mark there too. Was it genius? No way. Actually as a writing student it was fun to correct his writing mistakes in my head as I went. But I enjoyed it. The book is nearly 170 pages long. The mystery had me going until page 100 when I put it down for the day. That night I woke in the middle of the night and half asleep I figured out the mystery. I finished the book anxious to see if I was right and I was. I literally figured out the mystery in my sleep. But the story was entertaining and the characters mildly interesting. And though I had the mystery all sorted out I was still excited to finish the book and confirm that I was correct. There was one thing I was a little disappointed in, though its nit picking. I was really excited about this book because it was originally published in 1989. I was so ready for some all out 80's goodness! And it was there, the jock was wearing Converse sneakers like Emilio Estevez in Breakfast Club, a Honda Accord passed them on the street so I looked up a picture cause I just had to see what an '88 Accord looked like! I was having so much fun! Then all of a sudden the main characters IPod is blasting in his ears. WHAT??? I double checked, it was written in 89 and reprinted in 06. What the duce?? To make a long story short from what I can surmise it seems that what they did was they wanted to make the new edition of the book relevant to new generation so they swapped out what was probably a walkman in the original edition to be an IPod and changed some cult following film from the 80's to Lord of the Rings and the music at the school dance to Missy Elliot and Kanye West. They made quick name changes to easy things but the problem with this is that the big picture things couldn't be changed. It would require a whole rewrite of sections of the book. For instance, rather than jump on their home PC's and connect to the internet they go to the library computer lab to look through old newspapers. It doesn't make any sense and if you dont know that the book was originally published in 89 and they changed things it really makes it confusing and I can imagine readers feeling like the big picture things that happen don't make any sense and is using lack of technology as a bad plot device like in crappy horror movies.Anyway, overall I really liked the book. I am looking forward to reading the next one.

Love!
I absolutely loved the Fear Street books as a middle school kid. I read every single one my schools library had and I just recently started trying to collect all of them for my kid. So glad Amazon has most of them!

Modernized from the original
The product is great quality, brand new. No damage to the package and delivered on time as promised. What I expected was the original story in an obvious reprint. It's not an original first edition and it is not advertised as one. Cover art is obviously updated and plain to see. However, I did not expect that the story would be somewhat re-written to be modernized. For example, the original story from 89 (I think) has a line in the beginning of Chapter 4 where Cory says he is listening to his Walkman. This version says he is listening to his iPod. It was a little disappointing as I actually grew up in the 80s and 90s reading the originals and that stood out more like something geared toward attracting the generation after mine, so the nostalgic value for me is a little lost. No fault of the seller, just a fair warning to know what you are buying before you add to your cart.

Great story!
This is a great 1st book in Fear Street. I used to have several of this series but never had the chance to read this one, nor owned it.Loved this book and looking forward to reading this series. I loved the interaction between Cory and Lisa and the overall story.

Just okay
I'm a bit disappointed with how this read turned out, more so since I've always loved Goosebumps. In this novel we follow a typical teen boy named Cory. He's a natural goofball and enjoys entertaining his friends as the class clown. That is, until the new girl shows up. Mysterious and elusive, he can't seem to figure her out and pretty soon she's all he thinks about. Determined to know her, Cory gets more than he bargained for as he discovers dark secrets about her and Fear Street.Despite my rating, I have to say that the ambience of this novel was really great. Foggy streets, dangerous late night adventures, general creepiness. These are all things that I look for in a scary novel. However, I felt these elements were more of a teaser than anything else.See, this novel ended up being more of a thriller than something paranormal, and personally I always prefer paranormal to something normal that can be explained. Monsters, ghosts, and ghouls are something of a staple of R.L. Stine, and that wasn't really what was delivered here. Sure, the signs seemed to point in that direction, but it was a big letdown that that wasn't the case. Just trying to save others some time if they think this novel is paranormal. It's not.Cory is alright as the MC, but he's a bit of an easily distracted fool, which seemed really convenient in certain situations. His hobby of being a gymnast also saved him in moments that seemed nearly impossible to triumph, and that felt a little too coincidental to me.I think my rating would've been higher if this novel took us to get crazy places, but most scenes tended to stick to the high school, Fear Street, and Cory's home, so much that the action elements felt lackluster after a while. It also would've been higher if there was some of that cheesy slapstick humor we're used to, but it just wasn't there. If you like thrillers I say go for this one, but if you want something paranormal and terrifying look elsewhere.
